Depends on the team and if they have a good running game or passing game honestly.

Brother, the majority of this board doesn't know the difference between read option or RPO.

With superior athletes, cover 1.

Press the box and force O to be uncomfortable

Talent-equated or inferior talent? I’m going cover 3. Death by 1000 cuts, perhaps. But make the O string together sustained drives

Ding ding ding. If you’ve got a good pass rush and long corners who can run, cover 1.

However against modern offenses, you have to be able to mix up coverages or they will figure you out (unless your talent gap is large)

brother Marcel this forum only knows one thing — bait LSU fans and pretend they’re taking the bait. X’s and O’s might as well be Greek. Try “Chips are down, will Lane Kiffin get fired for screwing a co-ed by Year 2?” and you’ll have a more successful thread

it's not either/or

you do variations of 1, 2, 2 man under, 3, man free, four across disguise, combos (aka, brackets), multiple pre-snap and post-snap disguises, rolls from 3 to 2, rolls from 2 to 3, etc, to create well over 20 different coverages

It depends on if the offense's tendencies are pass heavy or run heavy but I'd go Inverted Tampa 2 base vs. a pass heavy RPO and adjust from there.

I'm saying that because it seems most RPOs are pass heavy these days.

ETA- I'm out of chips. Need to go to the grocery store.

Nick Saban, the greatest coach of all time (and future US president), said the key to stopping RPO is to plug in an oversized DT.

Cover 1 is a risky proposition in college unless your corners are top notch. Any time I see college teams playing Cover 1, I immediately look outside to the X receiver and see how the corner is covering him. If the corner is pressing the X receiver, it's game over. You might give up more yards underneath playing Cover 3, but you're less likely to give up the deep shot.

I'd lean Cover 3 myself

Asked my 9 year old. Madden recommends Cover 3 zone.

It's about choosing which poison kills you slowest. Cover 1 dies outside, Cover 3 dies underneath.

Follow on question: Chips are down: do you want a 3-4, 4-3, or 4-2-5 as your base D against a modern RPO/spread offense?

Feel like this is why these offenses break down in the redzone. You no longer have the deep threat so everything is underneath and defense can react quicker.
