No one is knocking Saban. It’s just the truth of the matter. He was 72 years old. He was putting more into the program in those last few years than he could afford. The assistants and coordinators were no where near the caliber he employed earlier at Alabama. It showed up in development.
And as much as Saban tried to help with the transition, Alabama got hit with two long portal windows that don’t even exist anymore. The depth got undermined. We lost a ton of younger guys.
DeBoer has rebuilt the roster but he’s got to stop losing to teams he shouldn’t and being non competitive in some games. Despite some depth issues in 2024 and 2025, he has fielded a team more talented than most all of his competition.
All that to say, DeBoer inherited a great situation but it’s not the perfect situation everyone just assumes.

The program and the players were not fine in 2023. I think that was probably Saban's best coaching job. He had shite for assistants by the end of his career. That was the major issue. That's what contributed to misses in recruiting and lack of player development.

It isn't hate. He became the Alabama HC and all of a sudden was a top 5 coach? Give me a break. He had one very successful season as a P5 HC with the playoff run. So did Sonny Dykes....
Don't believe me? Look at coaching rankings from 2023 versus 2024 and you'll see him shoot up because he became Bama's HC.
I'll tell you one thing. I would be very concerned as a Bama fan knowing they have worse championship odds in DeBoer's third year than they did in year 1 and year 2 under DeBoer.

He didn't shoot up because he was Bama's coach. He shot up because he followed up an 11-2 season with a title game appearance. He also shot up from 2022 to 2023

Because he only had real success one season, making the playoffs in 2022 despite many saying there were better, more deserving teams. They lost to Georgia 65-7. That left an impression. He followed that up by going 5-7 the next season. That is why.

If he had continued having the success he did his first two years absolutely.
He has only been a p4 coach for the last 4 seasons.
Here is a list of active coaches who have made the CFP at least twice in the past four seasons.
Kirby Smart
Curt Cignetti
Ryan Day
Steve Sarkisian
Dan Lanning
Kalen Deboer
That list looks remarkably similar to most of the “best current coaches” lists.

Dykes was ranked 11 after his one good year at TCU and reaching the playoff finals. His team was embarrassed in that game. He followed that up with a 5-7 season or maybe he would be ranked in the top 5. DeBoer was ranked 23 after having what would be his breakout year at UW. He followed that season by going to the playoff finals and actually competing.

Would he have followed his championship game appearance with a 5-7 season? If so, I doubt he would be ranked top 5.
DeBoer's track record isn't as long, but his winning percentage is significantly higher than Dykes's.
