I was at that game, and tailgated beforehand with an Auburn fan who was attending his first Iron Bowl, ever.
I saw him at one point on the big screen with his hands on his head.

False. He took over a team with significant issues at offensive and defensive line. He also had the detriment of NIL in that 26 players left after Saban retired, including a Freshman All-American and Ohio State's current starting QB. There was a talent drain that created a significant team downgrade.

The good deal of the 2009 championship team was recruited by Shula including guys like Rolando McClain, Greg McElroy, Javier Arenas. Other guys like Kareem Jackson and Marquise Maze were on their way but not yet signed when Shula was fired. Around 14 of the starters on the '09 team were from the Shula era. Now, Saban brought in some elite talent to fill out that team, and was a much better coach, but there wasn't a huge gap between the talent that both inherited, especially wit the guys that left when Saban retired.

There was a sticky thread tracking all the Alabama transfers when Saban retired. Alabama lost over half their scholarship players to graduation, the draft and the portal, including two first team all-Americans (for Ohio State instead of Alabama).
You can post whatever you want, but that doesn’t make it true. Venables took over a program that hadn’t lost more than 2 games in 5 seasons.
The five season before Vanables: 56-10
Two seasons with Venables: 16-10
Venables won 40 less games to reach his 10th loss than the guy he replaced did in the 5 seasons prior.
In his first two seasons at OU Riley went 24-4. In his first two seasons at OU Venables went 16-10.
In 5 seasons at OU Riley had less than 11 wins just one season. In 2 seasons at OU Venables has yet to win 11 games in a season.
You must be crushed by how badly Oklahoma has regressed.
The lack of awareness it takes for an OU fan to take this strategy is mindboggling.

I think he has done well overall. The attrition he inherited in early 2024 was astounding, and he gets major credit for keeping the train on the tracks. He's also 5-1 vs. historical rivals (7-2 if you want to throw UGA in there). That's as solid as one should expect.
That said, there were some lowlights the past two seasons which are troubling. The ending of the 2025 season was especially hard to watch.
