I mean I agree about NYE, your whining about the Rose Bowl is stupid but for some reason that's what people like to do these days.
The difference in ratings isn't that big, especially when you consider the matchups last year were much better (at least on paper). Bama ND are the two biggest brands in the sport and Ohio State Clemson was two really good teams with elite QB talent and what was expected to be a very competitive game.
Everyone knew the outcomes of this year's games so to get those numbers, especially with Cincy in one of the games, is actually pretty impressive.

Almost like having two playoff games on NYE is a terrible idea. The fact the NCAA/ESPN let the Rose Bowl dictate these decisions show how pathetic both organizations are.
Apparently a big hitch in the 12 team playoff agreement is that changing the date or time of the Rose Bowl requires a unanimous vote, and the Rose Bowl won't budge. I suspect the new tv contract, likely with multiple networks and 12 teams, will not allow the unanimous stipulation. Let the Rose Bowl have 4:00 on New Years Day, but leave them out of the play off bowl rotation if they insist on that date and time. Utah and Ohio State would have been in the play offs, so the Rose Bowl might have something like Purdue vs UCLA. This nonsense is like the NIT telling the NCAA what to do with the basketball tournament.

Used to be the shite tier bowls before NYE. Mid tier bowls on NYE and good bowls/BCS New Year’s Day.
Semi finals should be NYD along with all non playoff NY6 bowls. Move citrus and outback to NYE

The more we regionalize this sport, the more we'll marginalize it. If we want to keep this money train on the tracks, we're going to have to expand the playoffs.

Still pretty good ratings.
Last year’s national championship game, the college basketball national championship game and Kentucky Derby were the only non NFL sports broadcasts that had more than 16.5 million viewers in the last calendar year.

Dude the difference in 3M viewers is a pretty big deal for advertisers. Those games were -15% vs last year.
Now it’s relative, right. Like a CFB playoff game is still massive vs an NBA Finals game or Stanley Cup game etc.

The FBS lacks cohesion and inclusion.
The NFL has 32 teams and now 14 make the playoffs, based on a simple set of rules. No formulas, no "eye tests"; a committee doesn't pick who gets in.
The FBS has 130 teams and uses a committee to invite 4 teams that it likes.
Once the FBS figures out that inclusion will lead to higher profits and they figure out how to do it, you will see more teams get invited.

What about the previous times the playoff semifinals were on New Years Eve?

Definitely less than exciting semi-final matchups this year.

Next season New Years Day is on a Sunday and college football does not want to compete with the NFL so the semi finals will be on New Years Eve again.

My point was mainly it wasn't because of NYE and certainly not because of the Rose Bowl. It's because the matchups sucked on paper and it played out predictably.

Same shite different year. College football has killed the golden goose. All the resources go to same 3-4 teams. Unless you’re a Bama fan its boring having Bama win it every year. Zzzzzzzz
Well, be better. We can't help it that you keep hiring idiots and paying them to leave.

Certainly the Bama-Cincy matchup wasnt moving the needle but UGA-Michigan should have been higher. Not sure why it wasnt.
