Depending on the phone you have, I'd recommend downloading them as a file to save on a computer/flash drive/cloud. I did this with a couple of my Mom's because it'd be my luck I'd damage my phone and not be able to access them.

It might depend on service provider. Verizon can help. We did this with old vm's from my brother
