Butch Jones is on the verge of being fired after only 1 season at Ark State

What this means is that coaches with a -4 record compared to their talent level and schedule/home field advantage (basically he's lost 4 games he shouldn't have already) almost always get fired at the end of a year like that. An we're only in week 8.
The Red Wolves are curenetly 1-6 and have not beaten an FBS team this season. They're only win was against 1-AA Central Arkansas in week one.
Ed O is at -4 games on the year right now and has already been fired.
Conversely, Blake Anderson, the former Ark State coach who left for Utah State last year, is winning his division right now and is has won 4 games already that he shouldn't have based on talent snd schedule.
Objectively, the Butch Jones experiment has been a phenomenal disiater.
Will he get actually get fired?? Who knows, but it ain't looking too good.

ASU would owe him $2 million if they fire him after this year. Not gigantic, but not exactly chump change for a Sun Belt school.
However, they could probably make the buyout money back by scheduling an arse whopping from the likes of Alabama or Texas or Notre Dame, etc a few times in a season.

- 5 years (December 13th, 2020 - December 31st, 2025), $825,000 per season.
- Contract extended by 1 year if A-State wins 8 games over FBS opponents in a season.

If other schools come calling for Jones’ services early, there’s a seven-figure price tag. It’s a $2,000,000 buyout if Butch steps down during the first year of the contract. It’s reduced to $1,500,000 in Year 2, $850,000 in Year 3, $650,000 in Year 4, and $450,000 in Year 5.
If A-State terminates the contract without cause: “The University will pay you as liquidated damages an amount equal to five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000.00) times the number of years (including pro-rata for partial years) remaining during the otherwise unexpired term following any such termination, subject to your duty to mitigate by finding other comparable football-related employment.”

Perfect timing. I saw Nick leaving campus the other day and there was some mud behind his back tires. That benz is nowhere near as clean as when Butch Jones was there. Come on home Butch Nick has a dirty car for you

College football coach has to be the sweetest, most pressure free job in America. You can get paid millions for absolutely sucking and cleaning out your desk. Whatever agent first started suckering ADs into including ridiculous buyout clauses in contracts created a mass number of future underperforming multimillionaires.
I mean...you really needed a buyout clause in order to hire Butch Jones? Or to keep Ed O from leaving LSU? I know it's just monopoly money to ADs...but still.

They hired him the day before Malzahn was fired from Auburn.. I would have much rather had Malzahn back if I were them

There is a lot of truth to that. Not just in contracts but in the way these guys almost always get rehired.
You can fail miserably at job on multiple levels repeatedly and continue to get opportunities.

And Central Arkansas must be down this year to lose to Ark St. UCA is generally pretty good in their conference
