I’m really enjoying the dumpster fires at A$M and Auburn right now. That’s two potential problems neutralized for the time being.

They are beautiful sights to behold aren't they: the soft amber glow in the night sky, the ashes being scattered all over the SEC? And it's footballs season. What more could a fan ask for? That said, I agree with Harsin's decision. If a player doesn't want to play he needs to leave and open a spot for one who does.

According to the source close to the Auburn football program, Harsin was refusing to allow players to request a redshirt without a medical reason for not playing. It was being referred to as "you play or you go", forcing players to prematurely give up on their 2022 season in order to not lose a season of eligibility.

I have no problem with this.

He’s bad but not Chad Morris bad. So there’s that.

Why so? Is the scholarship to practice or is the scholarship to play? I think Harsin is an idiot, but at any other school of the coach says you’re good enough to play and. Player says “nah. Don’t want to” wouldn’t we expect that coach to suggest transferring then?

Yeah, people thinking this qualifies as "cause" for dismissal clearly are clueless about what the term means. Choosing whether or not to redshirt kids is clearly within the purview of the head coach. Suggesting that he is somehow violating his contract in doing so is beyond wishful thinking...it's stupid.

Kids being able to 'opt out' on their own and gain an additional year of eligibility is a dangerous thing in the era of NIL and the portal. Coaches should have full authority on who plays and who doesn't play. A kid no wanting to play (injury aside) is a quitter.

I knew from the very beginning that this guy wouldn't be a good fit. In order to succeed at Auburn, you have to have some ties to the program and you have to be able to recruit in the Deep South. Harsin had never set foot below the Mason-Dixon prior to his arrival on the Plains. He didn't understand the SEC, the Auburn Family, or what it takes to win at a high level in this part of the country.

We was the OC at Texas and HC at Arkansas State. Clearly he doesn't remember how to recruit the South from those stints.

But I don't disagree with the rest of your post.

Good for Harsin!

He knows he may have players on his roster that want that year of eligibility back, only to enter the transfer portal. Screw that, if they are able to play then they should play or leave.

Devil's Advocate- but had Urban Meyer before he went to Florida? Had Nick Saban before he went to LSU?
Not trying to be a smartass, but legit have always wondered. Those are 2 guys that were outsiders but took the bull by the horns.

My guess is that how this is being portrayed isn't 100% accurate as I assume Harsin is probably telling players that redshirting or not is about whether their team needs them and that is up to him not them. Sounds like he is trying (unsuccessfully) to keep control of the team. I don't really care if it's accurate or not, an SEC west team falling apart while LSU is building back into a power works for me.

ATPB 2.0?

ATPB was shrouded in a perceived “scandal”. This time we just have a coach who seems to be a good guy just way in over his head with no clue how to run an SEC program.

Quick, someone tell Auburn it's "Pay to Play" (aka the Cam Newton Theory) not "Play or Pay" (aka Burn Down the Program theory)

Wait.......on the other hand, dont tell them!

Pretty shitty way for Harsin to frame it (although it may be the way some disgruntled party is framing it) but have to say that is a very snowflake take to think that is a firable offense. Good luck finding a judge or jury that will say that making a healthy scholarship player actually play the sport they are on scholarship to play is legitimate cause for dismissal.
