We fly in tonight and have a few places lined up. We are hitting Buffalo, of course. As well as Dark Arts and RD1 in Lexington. We have been a few times before but I am wanting to find smaller, lesser known places with quality bourbon. We have already been to Whiskey Thief and Larrikin. Any suggestions for smaller places?

If you can't drink and enjoy it, without the need to get hammered.... yes, leave it alone. Then again, be responsible and make your own choices.

And don't speak as if church folk don't drink

THIS is gospel truth. The actual sin is drunkenness. Having said that, one of my fondest memories is my late wife and I doing a tasting at Four Roses distillery and her surprising me with my personalized bottle of single barrel. I have never opened it, and probably never will. Already told my family to break it out when I die and toast Nana and Papa!

Never invite churchfolk fishing: if you take only one along, they’ll drink all your beer. But if you take two, neither one will touch a drop.

Second this. Cool what they’ve done with the place.

I have been multiple times. This is the perfect time to go as a lot of good bourbon gets released in October.

My recommendations:

1. Look at distillery visiting hours and plan accordingly. Its a lot of driving.

2. Go to the tours at Woodford Reserve and Makers Mark. Both are great tours.

3. For good bourbon, try Heaven Hill, Buffalo Trace, and Willett. Hopefully you can score a bottle of Family Reserve Bourbon and not just the rye.

4. The Bourbon Trail only includes certain distilleries. Don't worry about that marketing.

5. We always base out of Bardstown. 1792 is in Bardstown and some things to do in town. Also well located to trip out of.
