*Final AP rankings used

Wins against the Top 25 (2006-2025):
65- Alabama
50- Georgia
44- Oklahoma
42- LSU
40- Texas
29- Auburn
28- Florida
26- South Carolina
24- Ole Miss
21- Texas A&M
17- Tennessee
16- Arkansas
13- Missouri
10- Kentucky
8- Miss St
4- Vanderbilt

Wins Against the Top 10:
26- Alabama
21- Georgia
18- LSU
13- Florida
12- Auburn
12- Oklahoma
9- South Carolina
9- Texas
6- Arkansas
6- Texas A&M
5- Ole Miss
4- Missouri
3- Tennessee
2- Kentucky
0- Miss St
0- Vanderbilt

Wins Against the Top 5:
18- Alabama
9- Georgia
9- LSU
7- Auburn
4- Florida
4- Oklahoma
4- South Carolina
4- Texas
3- Ole Miss
3- Tennessee
2- Texas A&M
1- Arkansas
1- Kentucky
0- Miss St
0- Missouri
0- Vanderbilt

Some observations:

*South Carolina has had some big wins over the years... more than I realized.
*Arkansas having as many Top 10 wins as A&M and more than Ole Miss is surprising.
*Missouri having zero Top 5 wins in 20 years is a bit surprising... turns out they are 0-46 against the Final AP Top 5 since 1977. Their last Top 5 win came against Final #2 USC in 1976.
*Tennessee has been dogshit for nearly 2 decades.

Hmmmm...interesting. I'm curious to know how teams have done playing the number one ranked team over the years. I think I read once Kirby is 2-1 in those games. We took down Tenny a few years ago when they were ranked number one. Bama probably is tops in that category as well, I'd think.

Vandy beat #1 Alabama in 2024

Just saw that *final AP rankings*

Seems a little disingenuous

It penalizes a team for beating another team and moving them down the rankings. Or a team could win a big-time game against a healthy team, and the losing team could suffer an injury later in the season that derails their season, making it look like a lame win early on. Nobody but this dweeb follows this stuff

By his logic, nobody could ever claim to have beaten a number 1 team unless your win was against the national champion earlier in the season. It makes no sense.

This is the stuff Auburn fans are forced to do to keep them relevant after 5 straight losing seasons and 3 head coaches.

on the contrary it's the only sane and logical way to do it.

A team could be ranked in the top 10 in august by meaningless polls before the season even begins but end the year 3-9. Should someone get credit for a "top 10 win!" over that team simply becuase they were ranked high when the season started even though they actually sucked arse?

If a team is in the top 10 at the end of the year, they've proven that they're a good team over the course of a full season. Ditto for top 5, or top 20, or whatever. Taking a snapshot poll from one very specific week in time is just crazy.

By his logic in 2024, Vandy didn't beat the number 1 team.

Oregon and Michigan beat the number 1 team retroactively by virtue of the final AP poll, even though when the game was played, OSU was not number 1. Its so dumb

well that alabama team finished with 4 losses and barely ranked in the top 20.

Was it awesome? Hell yes. Should Vandy clam a win over #1? Absolutely they do, without question.
With that said though they didn't beat a top 5 team in 2024. They beat a team that lost 31% of the games it played.

How so? It actually shows wins against an opponent's true measure.

How dumb would it be for LSU to get credit for a Top 5 win last year for beating a severely overrated Clemson team in Week 1, while other teams who beat the same Clemson team later in the year get zero credit for beating even a Top 25 team? Clemson was never a Top 25 team last year and certainly not Top 5.

Final season rankings are the only way to go if you want accurate and consistent measures.

I personally don't think that should matter. College football has such a psychological element that sometimes a high ranking, by itself, is enough to overpower a power team.

And if Vandy hadn't beaten that Bama team, they would have gone to the playoffs at 10-2, and who knows what might have happened. This logic penalizes Vandy for winning at the time a massive game.

It makes complete sense. It means those teams beat the #1 team that season... not some overrated pretender who was never truly #1.

I know this is something that is foreign to a Tennessee fan, but a lot of schools have wins against the #1 team of a particular season.

Wins against the Final #1 team since 2006:

2- Auburn
2- Ole Miss
1- Alabama
1- Arkansas
1- Kentucky
1- LSU
1- Texas A&M

In 2024, if Vandy hadn't beaten Bama, Bama goes at worst 10-3 and most likely ends the season in the top 10 with a playoff appearance, just like Tennessee did that year.

Instead, Vandy beat Bama, which made them 9-3, and they lost their postseason game, finishing ranked #17.

One Vandy win is the difference between Bama being in the top 10 vs. the top 20 in 2024, and you penalize Vandy for this, saying they have 0 top 10 wins.

How is this not obviously a bad metric? You penalize teams for their own win

you don't think a team's results on the field of play over the season should matter? In that case can you tell me why it DOES matter that a team is ranked high before a single game is played? The clemson example someone posted above is a perfect thought exercise.

vandy hasn't been penalized in any way, and they did win the game in real life, and it was and still is to this day massive. None of that is being taken away from them.

They obviously have. Go look at the OP where he says they have 0 wins against the top 10.

So LSU's win against a 6 loss Clemson team last year should count as a top five win?

Oregon gets to claim a top five win with their win against 6 loss Penn State last year?

Why would Vandy get to claim a top 15 win against what would eventually be an EIGHT LOSS South Carolina team in week 3?
