Beyond Money, Why Will There Still Be a SEC Championship Game?

Now that there are no longer divisions, what really is the point of the conference championship game? The regular season champ could easily be determined with a tie-breaker system. The same system that will be used inevitably to determine the participants in the game in years when teams are tied with the same record. I don’t see any upside to it for the conference other than money.
The two teams that will qualify would be locks to make the 12 team playoff without a conference championship game. But there is the very real possibility the additional loss could knock a team out. Not only that, they could even be leap frogged by another SEC team that was behind them previously. A very possible scenario would be a 12-0 or 11-1 SEC team playing one of several 10-2 teams. The 10-2 teams would all likely be ranked between 6-12 in the rankings. Let’s say the team that makes it was ranked 8th and loses. And they fall 5 spots, like Georgia did last year. They would miss out on making the playofffs, while the other 10-2 teams would likely make it. In that scenario, a team would be penalized for playing the game. An even worse scenario would be a 12-0 team beating the one 10-2 team in the conference in the championship, with a logjam of 9-3 teams behind them. That would leave the SEC with one undefeated and a bunch of 3 loss teams. In that scenario the SEC likely loses a slot to another conference.
I understand they are going to keep playing the game because of the amount of money it generates. But other than that, I don’t see it having any upside for the league.
It won’t happen every year. It might not even be common. But it will cost a team, and maybe the league, a playoff spot eventually. So why play the game?

I doubt a loss would knock an SEC team out of a position in the playoff. I think only another conference team pulling an upset in their conference championship game could do that. If a 9-3 team is in the SECCG I don't see the commitee punishing them for a loss there.

I actually like the SEC Championship Game.
For one thing, the SEC is the best conference, so I think winning the SECCG is better than winning a bowl game or playoff game.
It's cool to be able to win a championship, and have a successful season without always having to win the natty - which will now be harder than ever before.

You lost me at “Beyond Money”. Money is King now. Losing and making bank is more important than winning and losing money.

To determine the conference champion. With 16 teams, it's VERY possible that you could have two 8-0 conference teams.

No 12-0 team is going to be left out of a playoff if they lose the conference championship.

this, no. 1 fallback if your team doesn't win the national championship

It needs to go, it served its purpose but it hurts the sec best teams. Impossible to do but would love for it to be a play in game for sec teams that were on the bubble instead of 1 and 2

We need a champion as they get a bye in the playoffs.
Nobody in the league plays the same schedule.
The only way to settle it is with a championship game.
Hence, a championship game.

We’re going to need the revenue it generates to help offset player revenue costs.

Both basketball and baseball have figured how how to crown a regular season champion despite the disparity in schedules.
The SEC could very easily use a tie breaker system to determine the champion in football just like they do in other sports. That SEC team would get a bye without saddling one of their top two teams with an additional late season loss.

SEC should go to a 4 team playoff for the conference championship. MO MONEY, MO MONEY, MO MONEY!!!!

eliminating divisions, more or less, eliminates this possibility unless someone had a dreadful OOC W/L record. It's going to be basically impossible to make the SECCG with more than 1 conference loss moving forward. If we still had divisions and you had a 6-2 division champ, then yeah I think this argument would have more merit.
What it could do, however, is cause the losing team to lose home field advantage and/or a bye in the CFPs

baseball and basketball have co-champions for the regular season if there's a tie. They use tie-breakers for conference tournament seeding.

There is really no need for the championship game without divisions. I personally would rather see the SECCG done away with now that the playoffs include 12 teams. That way we so no major injuries to key players before the playoffs. I don’t wanna see a bubble team miss out on the playoffs or a team get knocked out of a bye position because they screwed up and lost a meaningless game that really didn’t need to be played to determine a champion.

Say what? Heck even the computer models like FPI have only 2 SEC teams reaching 10+ wins in the new setup. I think it rounds Bama off to 9-3 as the 3rd best predicted record. It's going to be a bloodbath for most teams.

To determine who gets the bye in the playoff. Otherwise we'd often end up with co-champs like we did before the SECCG existed.
