Actually, no. The name was chosen because it had become standard to have an animal mascot associated with fierceness. The tiger was selected because the purple and gold colors fit well with tiger stripes. There was a regiment of Louisiana soldiers that predates (1830) the Civil War known as the Louisiana Tigers.

Alternate story is that Dixie comes from from the French word for 10, which was also the popular term for a currency note of that denomination in Louisiana in the early 19th century.

It was changed to " 'Tis summer the old folks are gay" to remove the racial overtones but Happy Chandler always sang the original line. He said that was how the song was written and that was how he was gonna sing it. I also believe that Happy didn't have a racist bone in his body. He was a legend.

Guarantee “power of Dixieland” in the Auburn chant is going to be drilled. Even though every player white, Black, mixed, Hispanic and in between have chanted it without one complaint.
