There was also a year in the 1910s that Auburn could claim. Too lazy to look it up

1966: Notre Dame, though Michigan State (fellow unbeaten who tied the Irish, with much of the country mad at Notre Dame playing for the draw) and Alabama (unblemished) have cases. The Irish were #1 on both sides of the ball and faced a slightly tougher schedule. Bama doesn’t claim this one, despite being #1 in the NCAA-listed Berryman and Sagarin. Trade 1973 and 1941 for this, Bama.

1913: Harvard, though some go with Chicago. Auburn has another title it could claim, finishing unbeaten and #1 in Billingsley’s formula that factors margin of victory.

William is not a poster to hate. He’s to be enjoyed.

He and 3rd10 are in the budding stages of a wonderful, loving relationship.

I, for one, am overjoyed.

USC lost to Arizona State in 1978

Therefore no title

USC also lost later in the year than Alabama. Bama climbed back up the polls to #2 then played and beat #1 Penn State. Yeah it was split, but it was legit

The NCAA does not "recognize" National Championships.

Eh, I've heard of weirder. Those two lovebirds should go ahead and book the honeymoon.

They only outscored opponents 45-1 that year.

Thoughts?

In 1942, there was no coaches poll, bcs, playoffs, etc..just the AP and OSU was #1 in the final poll. Not sure how UGA can get the nod over them.

It would be incredible if Yale hired a social media account rep to flex over all of college football on a regular basis. Incredible!

Vandy has 1920 and 1921. Not sure why we weren't even in the discussion in this article for those years.

I laugh at this.

quote:

1978: USC and Alabama split the polls. USC beat Alabama by 10 in Birmingham. Next.

1. September 23 - #1 Alabama lost in Birmingham to #7 USC, 24-14. New poll 1. Oklahoma, 2. Arkansas, 3. USC, 4. Michigan, 5. Penn State.(Bama falls out of top 5)

2. October 14 - #2 USC lost to UNRANKED Arizona State in Tempe 20-7. Alabama rejoined the top 5 by beating Florida 23-12. (USC falls out of top 5)

3. November 4 - Bama has won every game since the USC loss; USC returned to the top 5 after a 13-7 win at Stanford.

4. Nov.11 - #3 Alabama rolled along with a 31-10 win at #10 LSU. #5 USC beat #19 Washington 28-10. The new poll was 1. Penn State 2. Nebraska 3. Alabama 4. Oklahoma 5. USC.

5. Nov. 18 - Bama idle; #5 USC beat #14 UCLA by a score of 17-10. New poll: 1. Penn State 2. Alabama 3. USC 4. Oklahoma 5. Houston

6. December 2, #2 Alabama finished its season with a win in the Iron Bowl rivalry game over Auburn, 34-16. Final regular season top 5 was: 1. Penn State 2. Alabama 3. USC 4. Oklahoma 5. Michigan.

#1 Penn State accepted the Sugar Bowl bid to set up a 1 vs. 2 matchup with #2 Alabama. ONE BOWL FOR NO. 1: THE REST FOR FUN Bama beat the #1 team with the famous goal line stand.

#3 USC and #5 Michigan would square off in a Rose Bowl battle of 1 loss teams. USC beat the #5 team with a play that became the #10 Worse call in Sports History... The Charles White's "Phantom Touchdown".

AP poll, Alabama (11-1-0), on the strength of their Sugar Bowl win over former #1 Penn State, was voted #1.

In the UPI poll, USC (12-1-0) was voted #1, based in a large part on their 24-14 win at Alabama over the Crimson Tide in the third week of the season.

Long story short. #2 Bama beat #1 Penn St. for the national championship. One of the few times #1 and #2 played each other at the end of the season.

USC did beat Alabama, but early in the season and then proceeded to lose to an unranked team. At least Bama's loss was to a ranked team

Well you pretty much nailed my usual argument on that one.

I also like to remind USC fans that they could have probably played the #1 team in the nation too if they hadn't got tired to losing the Rose Bowl to southern teams and decided to exclude everyone else from playing in the bowl game.
