Look this will be the worst D we’ve had since 2007, but only because of injury.
The secondary is really solid, but will look worse than they are due to lack of pass rush.
No one can lose what we did to the draft the last few years and then add in the kind of injuries we’ve seen in the front seven while staying elite defensively. It’s not possible.
Losing Anoma and Alfano I think were the result of misses from an eval perspective during recruiting rather than a real loss on the field. They were both mentally and physically soft and frankly not geared to play under Saban, it just is what it is. They were empty carbs so to speak, they looked good on paper but weren’t ever going to be what people thought they were on signing day.
On the other hand, guys like DJ Dale, Justin Eboigbe and the freshman LBs will be elite eventually, but just need another year or two before they are ready.
You are looking at what would normally be our second unit most years at DL and LB being asked to learn on the fly, it’s not always going to be pretty.

And it’s not like Alabama is trotting out 3 stars all over the defense. It’s loaded in the three deep with top 100 defenders. It’s young and inexperienced. It was always going to struggle in 2019. And that was before the key injuries.
And two five stars are committed in the 2020 class already.
