Leaving LSU turned out to actually be the smartest thing Saban ever did.

I remember when he was hired, almost everyone said "WHO??" Almost no one knew who the hell he was until it was mentioned that he was the coach on the losing end of an arse kicking LSU gave Michigan State in the Indy Bowl under DiNardo. He wasn't even one of what seemed to be about 20 names that fans and sports talk hosts were throwing around as replacements for DiNardo (which ended up being a good thing).
I'm not saying he was a complete unknown, but if he was that respected then, he wouldn't have been coaching at a Michigan State program that was on probation. Most people didn't know anything about him.

Only L1U counts appearances. We don't count the title games Saban made but lost. Ridiculous.

Since year 2000 the regular season series is 10-10
