Forgive my ignorance, but honest question:

Are analysts allowed on the recruiting trail? If so, Charlie will be a tremendous addition to that team for recruiting the southeastern states, in particular Florida.

If not, he'll still be a great addition to that defensive staff.

He is a good coach. Saban is making a lot of good moves, motivated largely in part by his PBSD.

I doubt Strong even wants the DC job. These analyst roles are easy jobs that are used to prevent their former employers from voiding their massive buyouts. Most contract buyouts have language requiring the coach to seek employment within the industry with any salary offsetting what the former school owes. Taking a DC job is like working for free in most of these scenarios. Instead they get to be analysts making millions while rehabbing their image by taking a sabbatical year or two to step back and learn from the best. Returning to a coordinator position for someone like Butch Jones or Strong only further risks their reputation if they have a bad year.

I know Bama had injuries on defense but this had to be the worst defense Saban has fielded since 2007. No brainer IMO

He can do everything except have off-campus in-person contact

I don't think this is entirely accurate. They definitely can't recruit, but they also can't coach players.

quote:

Their roles are a blend between graduate assistant and advance scout. Unlike a quality control position in the NFL or a graduate assistant in college, analysts are not among the group of coaches the NCAA allows to instruct players. Analysts and quality control coaches, like GAs, are not permitted to recruit.

Thank you, that and the link were helpful.

Even if he is more of a GA role than anything else (which is what I figured would be the case), maybe that'll be a good thing.

One thing Charlie struggled with more than anything else while HC at Texas was gametime decisions and in-game calls / adjustments. It sounds like that will be completely out of his hands in this position.

Maybe being strictly an analyst will be good for him to get back to his basics as a defensive-minded guy, which is what shaped his career to get where he was in 2013.

I wish the guy the best!

Short answer is no by default - BUT - if a coach leaves at some point and has not yet been officially replaced, there are ways to send non-position coaches out on the recruiting trail. I believe there is some kind of specific certification they have to get, but UGA has done this with Jonas Jennings (Dir. Player Development) as well as other non-position coach staffers as well in the past.

I'm not sure if an analyst can be included, but if possible, this is the only way I can envision it being an option off hand.

Gotcha. I’m not either but it seems like I read some where before that off field staff can’t go on recruiting visits. But I don’t know
