You know State has a good team when the cowbell bitching starts.

WEEK 1: Yeah your QB looked good but it was Louisiana-Monroe
WEEK 2: Yeah you beat the brakes off an 8 win Big Ten team in their house but it was just Minnesota.
WEEK 3: Yeah you won a road SEC game and had a 41-6 run but it was Beamer.
WEEK 4: Yeah you beat a Top 20 Missouri team but COWBELLS.

Truth is, State may have a decent squad this year. Defense is much improved and offense is putting up good numbers. Tempo is masking the offensive line problems, which will probably catch up with us this week, but 8-4/9-3 is a real possibility.

This is the first of three games where if we can pull an upset, CFP is not out of the question.

Grandfathered in. What they call a special SEC exemption; no one else has that. Miss State isn't allowed to swing their cowbells after the center gets over the ball. Which, believe me, will never get penalized.

I don’t know they both have fairly balanced offense. Miss st runs the football very well and outgains bama on the ground. I don’t think it hurts onr more than the other but bama relies on the pass helping clear running lanes and that may not be there if it’s heavy rain.

I do know the answer.

Up until 1974, it didn't matter. State was not a competitive team and no one cared. State beat Auburn and Shug Jordan complained to the SEC and had them banned.

They were officially banned but again, State was not competitive so it did not matter. During the late 90s, State had a pretty good 4 year run where they won 4 of 5 from Alabama and 4 straight against Auburn. Ended up in the SEC title game one season and had a 10-win season another.

The Alabama schools could not handle that, so in 2002, they bitched again and for the first time, there was a cowbell penalty (15 yards). Refs pretty much ignored it, but there was a game or two where the crowd was assessed penalties and they started taking them up at the gate. This pissed State fans off, plus we had the Croom era of incompetence, so people stopped coming to games.

We got a new athletic director, Greg Byrne (ironically now at Alabama), who pushed for the "Cowbell Compromise" when Mullen was hired. That's where we are now.

Synopsis:

Auburn got beat and butthurt and complained. State went back to sucking.
Alabama and Auburn got beat and butthurt and complained. State went back to sucking.
Greg Byrne pushed for a Compromise and the SEC athletic directors voted to allow them. Now its just fans on message boards that complain.

The Cowbell Compromise basically says State can ring them but when the center touches the ball they have to stop. Although there is not 100% compliance, its pretty good and it was solid Saturday night. B+ compliance. Officially as part of the SEC rule, State has to display messages and reminders to "Rest Your Bell, Just Yell" so we have a PSA before the game, and there are messages on the video board throughout the game. State is in compliance.

The only game I ever attended where it was ignored was last year against Arizona State. They gave those boys from the desert hell because they made fun of it before the game.
