The New York Times to Disband Its Sports Department

The New York Times said on Monday that it would disband its sports department and rely on coverage of teams and games from its website The Athletic, both online and in print.

Joe Kahn, The Times’s executive editor, and Monica Drake, a deputy managing editor, announced the change to the newsroom as “an evolution in how we cover sports.”

“We plan to focus even more directly on distinctive, high-impact news and enterprise journalism about how sports intersect with money, power, culture, politics and society at large,” the editors wrote in an email to The Times’s newsroom on Monday morning. “At the same time, we will scale back the newsroom’s coverage of games, players, teams and leagues.”

The shuttering of the sports desk, which has more than 35 reporters and editors, is a major shift for The Times. The department’s coverage of games, athletes and team owners, and its Sports of The Times column in particular, were once a pillar of American sports journalism. The section covered the major moments and personalities of the last century of American sports, including Muhammad Ali, the birth of free agency, George Steinbrenner, the Williams sisters, Tiger Woods, steroids in baseball and the deadly effects of concussions in the National Football League.

I guess they can claim a national title from The Athletic now, albeit retroactively.

Seriously? The school who one night in 1988 woke up from 6 titles to 11 is going to joke about another school's "retroactive" titles?

Damn! The Athletic actually made it. When they started I thought that it was the shittiest idea ever and that they were blowing through money and had way too much overhead. But apparently the owners knew what they were doing and ended up cashing out. Good for them!

What day is it?

Oh, it’s BamaRanterRetroClaimTuesday.

They claim fake championships while worried about randomly taking their rival’s claims away.

Happy Tuesday , rant.

A lot of school's past titles have been awarded by organizations that are no longer around, so I don't see a problem here.

Using "Alabama mathematics", Notre Dame would now have 21 national titles (they claim only 11), trumping the Tide, and USC would have 18 national titles (they claim only 11), tied with the Tide.

Bama's complaining about other schools retroactively claiming national titles? Now, now, now.....

If we counted them like some of you like to pretend we do, we’d have more than the 18 claimed. 17. That 1941 bullshite needs to be dropped

Say what???

In Alabama's 1982 media guide, Bama claimed only 6 national titles. S-I-X!!

By the end of the 1980s, Alabama had magically won 11. E-L-E-V-E-N!! From 1983 to 1989, Bama lost a grand total of 25 games --- and still managed to win an additional 5 national titles!!

Y'all started this retroactive stuff -- now, deal with it!

I fail to see how this invalidates anything I said. I wasn’t Alabama’s SID in 1988.

This is like saying since the BCS isn’t a thing anymore then you can’t claim any of those titles….and I think you missed the part where we’ve never officially claimed 83

USC and notre dame both claim pre poll era titles. Just like Alabama does. Those teams were celebrated at the time as champions. Who gives a shite when they were officially recognized?

Aside from the bullshite 1941(which no bama fan will argue in favor of), we don’t claim non poll titles after 1936.

Those weren’t retroactive. Those were lost knowledge rediscovered.

Well, let's take a look at what Alabama's then-current SID, Wayne Atcheson, said as to why he added the 5 extra titles (keep in mind that 1934 was the only pre-Bryant national title claimed in Bama's 1982 media guide)..,.....

“I want to say the right thing here,” Atcheson explained to me (CBS Sports) in 2010 for an article in The Birmingham News. “I made the change because Coach Bryant had these 25 years and six national championships and they were emphasized so much. It was on all the stationery. And when I got there, it was a matter of seeing there were five others (before Bryant) and we should put them all together. It was as simple as that. …

“I tried to make Alabama football look the best it could look and just make it as great as it could possibly be. I was a competitor myself with the other schools, and what they bragged about and boasted about, I wanted people to know the best about my school.”

Nothing wrong with being competitive and proud of your school. But.......don'tcha think he went a bit overboard to the point of incredulity and just plain being wrong?

Oh, well. Everybody else has jumped on the wagon doing it, claiming some years that just absolutely make no sense (like you, Tennessee, trying to claim 1967 -- that's on par with Bama claiming 1941 -- stupid).

About 1941........

In 1941, Alabama lost 14-0 at home to eventual SEC champion Mississippi State and 7-0 at Vanderbilt. Atechson defended the 1941 inclusion for years, arguing the Mississippi State loss came in the rain, the Vanderbilt defeat was close, and that Alabama was the country’s best team by the end of the season thanks to wins over Georgia (8-1-1), Tennessee (8-2) and Texas A&M (9-2). -- CBS Sports

Atcheson should've been fired trying to claim 1941!!

Michigan is actually the worst at claiming stone age titles when the concept of a National Champion didn't even exist.

They claim to have 11 National Championships.

1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1918, 1923, 1932, 1933, 1947, 1948, 1997.

Out of all of those, a grand total of 2 of them had Michigan actually ranked #1 in the AP Poll.

1948 and 1997

Interesting fact, Michigan has never finished #1 in the Coaches Poll and has never played in any form of a National Championship Game.
