No. Although frustrating, Auburn recruiting will be fine. They’ll sign a smaller class than usual, and I’m frustrated with what they’re doing right now, but they’ll be fine.

Is Auburn planning to invest all its funds in the portal? Just guessing
Nah, Hugh is investing that money in the local “nail salon”. He has checked out and looking at his buyout.

Becoming an Auburn HC for 3 years appears to be a very lucrative early retirement strategy for coaches that clearly don't give a frick any more.

The bar is so low these days. Does it even matter what they do in recruiting?

Will that matter if Auburn goes 6-6 this coming season?

With rev share I don’t think it’s possible to sustain a competitive roster with small classes in this era
Paying a low 4* / high 3* depth player out of high school probably costs low 5 figures. Their portal value is minimal without proven production, so they stay and develop into contributors
If you don’t have those depth guys you are going to need to consistently go overpay in the portal to round out the roster

Elite recruiting is always King. But there seems to be a shift to the 3-star model you speak about. Georgia is still trying to get the 5 stars, but also has 8 - 3 stars, last I checked. BAMA is doing much the same. Keeping and developing talent may well be the more advantageous strategy going forward.

Top programs have always recruited some 3*s, and teams still need to have a good number of 5* / high 4* to compete for a title.
But with 85 roster spots, and having to pay all of those guys, its just not possible if you dont have a good chunk of your roster being affordable. Top players are making $3m+ a year now. Good players cost $1m+
Months back I read that even OL guys expected to be swing tackles, not starters, were getting paid as much as $500k in the portal. I would rather have a high 3* sit on the bench for 2-3 years than that. Team consistency doesnt hurt

It's the percentage points of super teams in their recruiting numbers that are changing a little. BAMA and Georgia stack 4 stars behind those 5 stars unlike most good recruiting teams in the SEC. They also have been losing a lot of depth in the transfer portal era for those 4 star specific reasons. More subtle at this point that science I would think, but redefining rosters are happening because of the upcoming cap. For everyone.

Thing is, 85 is no longer the number. I believe it's 105 limit with no walk-ons added. I have no idea why anyone with a limited salary cap would entertain those high-end numbers, but some might. I'd rather have less than 85 and pay my best core players. For me, that number could be more like 70-75. Coaches and GMs will have to figure it out.

Teams can still frontload talent this spring, some did and others didn't. I do look for massive bidding numbers to change dramatically going forward.

Its still 85 (scholarships) for this season, its expected to allow up to 105 in future seasons - but every player beyond 85 would be required to get full scholarship in the future.
With ADs having to splurge on revenue share Im not sure how they could take on the extra cost. Tuition/Board/Training/Food likely adds up to over $100k in cost per scholarship

having buyouts on player contracts is a big deal and I think it will help all schools have a more sustainable roster to develop

they likely won’t take many through the portal, either

It is WAAAAAAAAY too early to be calling anyone's 2026 recruiting class a bust or "drain buster". They'll end up doing just fine and will probably have a top 20 to top 15 class.

This is what our front office is already doing. Identifying those guys that are 87,88,89 three star players with NFL measurables that normally end up blowing up at a smaller school somewhere else.
In other words, the guys you already see in the portal every year who want to play at bigger schools.

Will you care if Mizzwho goes 4-8 this year?

Could have a number one class and still lack the coaching to win see aTm for proof of that.
