So AU was going to beat SC in 04, who beat them a combined 47-17 in 02 & 03, including a shutout? AU math at its finest.
Alabama beat Auburn by a combined, what, in 2011 and 2012? 91-14? What happened in 2013? Auburn beat Alabama?
I’m not saying Auburn would win for sure against USC in 2004, but your logic is fricking retarded. Auburn was loaded, too, and a better TEAM in 2004 than in 2002 and 2003.

The only reason why people bring up 2004 Auburn is because of the lopsided nature of the national championship game between USC and Oklahoma. The '06 Rose Bowl ended up becoming what the '05 Orange Bowl was billed to be leading up to the game. You had the Heisman Trophy winner and three other Heisman finalists (Peterson, White, and Bush) playing in a game that featured two teams that had run the table as #1 and #2. After Auburn's lackluster win over Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl, there was very little doubt in the media and in college football fandom that we were about to watch the two best teams in college football square off against each other on January 4, 2005.

ETA: TT beat me to the punch. FTR, I think the ‘83 claim is bogus.

No AP or Coaches titles= no national championship.

“Lackluster” win in a Sugar Bowl. Give me a break.

That might be true, however, the stat sheet doesn't tell that story.
Final Score

Virginia Tech - 13
Total Yards
Virginia Tech - 375
Auburn - 299
First Downs
Virginia Tech - 19
Auburn - 14

Pretty much. Bama has 13 legit national titles.

Some would certainly have hated a play for a tie, but it would have secured a national title for the Huskers.
I think he saw what had unfolded during the day. AU had the strongest argument their schedule, but as long as UT was in front of them they were a non-factor. When UT loss to a UGA team that AU had beaten, then the seed of doubt was planted as long as AU won. I do not think TO wanted to take a chance.

That clearly explains why the AP, FWAA, UPI, and USA Today trophies are sitting in the Miami Hurrican's trophy case
I guess they learned from big brother that shite like that doesn’t matter when it comes to claiming national championships.

stat sheet
Outside of the final score, that didn’t tell the whole story of Clemson throttling Alabama on January 7th, 2019.
Alabama had more first downs and only 50 less yards. Alabama also had more TOP by 3 minutes.
You know, stats.

Alabama was playing for a national championship in the CFP Era. Auburn still had an outside shot of at least splitting the national championship with the winner of the Oklahoma-USC game. Most of the national media was in Miami covering the build-up to the national championship game. All many of them saw of the Sugar Bowl was the final score. Had the USC-Oklahoma game ended up being close and had that 16-13 win over Virginia Tech been something closer to 34-10, who knows what could have happened? Maybe the AP gives their national championship trophy to Auburn?

Irrelevant. 2004 was before the “rise” of the SEC. the national media was never going to give Auburn a split. Not with the hype train behind USC.

Especially after only beating Virginia Tech by a field goal. It's the same reason why Miami got the nod over Auburn in '83. Auburn was arguably the better team but didn't deliver against Michigan when the spotlight was on them. The same thing happened to them in '04. They had a chance to pull ahead of Oklahoma in the minds of voters in the Iron Bowl but had a stinker of a game against a mediocre and depleted Alabama football team. Sure, they won the game on both occasions but neither of them LOOKED good. And in the subjective sport of college football, looks are everything.

It was the 2nd game of the year. AU beat 6 straight Top 20 teams to end the year, with Bama being the only one not in the Top 10.
