And it made me just think of something. Take Golesh at USF and his success. Now think of the caliber of player he could recruit to USF. Probably not the same caliber that he can at a major university, like Auburn. But the players he could recruit and coach are very happy to just be playing football. The players that schools like Alabama, Auburn, LSU recruit all know they are top notch players and therefore don't feel as fortunate as the players at a USF or Tulane. They feel the coach is lucky to have them and he will do whatever they ask him to do to keep them.

My how college football has screwed itself.

Yes, and it's why only a few right now have the credibility (Saban, Kirby, etc.) to navigate that over the long term. They can still tell guys to do it their way or get lost, with the carrot being the NFL and the stick being obscurity. But, obviously the portal weakened the stick.

I think Golesh is actually going to be a decent shot at balancing that for us. But contrast it with a guy like Harsin, who was used to MW kids who would run through walls and bring their lunch pail and so forth. I genuinely think he thought he could be effective in the SEC with that, and in some ways I wish he was right.

But you can't give a pep talk to a kid making 2m in NIL who was told he'd be a football god at 14 yet can barely read. It's nearly impossible. These coaches have to be NFL coaches in a sense, but they're trying to be all-business with overgrown children with money.

Are you just finding out that Auburn only cares about one game a year? The iron bowl. That’s it
so much so that we fired the only HC who had beaten Bama more than twice since Saban got there

You could be Penn State.

I remember the excuses back in the summer... how Auburn was the only team doing it right and August 1 would produce an explosion of talent. Do you remember? I remember

I think this will work itself out - over time. It will require a major paradigm shift in college athletics.

Said really bluntly by Will Stein today at the presser - if the first thing a recruit wants to talk about is money ? Move on.

Look - you can't put together a good football team with no money ... and you never could. But you can't just walk out and buy a good football team either. Just ask Jimbo Fischer.

Personally ... I think the first team that tones down the massive dollar amounts for high school recruits, and instead funnels the cash towards retention of proven starters and contributors wins. Partially because THAT approach will encourage transfers that can actually upgrade your existing talent.

I'd love to see what happens with a "bonus" style NIL deal. Based upon plays started maybe ... like some of the NFL language for rookie contract incentives.

Auburn has a booster problem and it’s not because of money. They meddle too much and was reported by a national media member why Lane Kiffin didn’t take the Auburn job when Freze was hired.

It isn't Auburn new HC fault. He needs more time to recruit better players.

Uh, Kiffin himself confirmed that he was heading to Auburn before his family intervened. It clearly didn't have much to do with booster meddling.

Here's my take from what little I got from my Sumrall source. Sumrall would of taken the Auburn job but Florida made the better offer. It was explained to me that there are those at Auburn that "Believe in Auburn and Love it" so much that they will never give up control. A new coach to them is an outsider and so they will never give total control to that outisder.
So, Auburn had some conditions and I don't know what they all were.
Florida on the other hand, is willing to give full control to Jon Sumrall. He and Urban had a long telephone conversation where Jon outlined his vision of what him coaching the gators would look like and Urban was like, it's your team.
Instead of like Auburn saying, "here's what we expect from you", Florida was like "what do you expect from us", this is what lead to Dave Caldwell coming on as GM. Sumrall wanted more time to coach and Florida is making that possible.
That's it. Simple.

Oh I remember. The excuses were as laughable then as they are now. Auburn fans are the kings of lowering expectations and pretending it is perfectly normal.

Almost all of the Auburn fans on the team message board have convinced themselves that forfeiting an entire recruiting class is perfectly fine.

They’ll be the first ones to blame Golesh in 2028 when he’s sucking wind with a terrible junior class that the boosters handed him.

The crap about Auburn having a booster / trustee problem is a myth and complete BS. Bama and Florida are much worse. Sumrall was lied to by urban and others. It all worked out for best… Sumrall at UF and Golesh at AU.

I believe Lane stirred the pot

Sumrall said he had been speaking with Lane extensively

He poisoned the well but it worked out best for us

Golesh is more of what we need at this moment in time

just like Ole Miss boosters are blaming Kiff in 2025 for the terrible junior class that the boosters handed him three years ago (12th in the SEC, ahead of only Arky & Vandy)
