thought everyone knew Auburn was elite. They’re one of the few schools that can compete for national championships every decade

They are formidable and a strong program. They are part of the big 5 in the SEC ( Tennessee has been ejected so big 6 is now big 5).
They are not elite. They are good but fail year after year to bama, LSU and Georgia. Auburn is good enough to win one on occasion like they did last year when they beat bama but they routinely lose to bama, LSU and Georgia.
Auburn and Florida are both very good and formidable but not on the elite level. They routinely lose year after year to Georgia, a team that both LSU and Bama owns.

Yeah the notion of splitting the big 6 evenly among divisions didn't work out at all, but I'd argue that it was flawed to begin with since the historical mean of the bottom three of the West (the MS teams and Arkansas) was much, much better than the bottom three of the East (Vandy, UK and SCar)

They've accomplished far more than most little brother type programs, and vs. the SEC too. So ya it's impressive what they've done considering.

2004 was an atrocity. Auburn should've jumped Oklahoma just based on SOS. Look up that schedule and the results. The only team Auburn played that came close to beating them, was LSU.........kinda like this past year, just in reverse.

I was going to say, we are more unlucky than underrated.

Yes 10-9 vs LSU was Auburn's only single score win in 2004. Oklahoma struggled down the stretch with very mediocre TAMU and Okie State. Auburn beat Tennessee twice, the Vols demolished Aggy 38-7 in the Cotton Bowl. Since USC vacated it, seems someone has to claim it, yall better do that before Utah beats you to the punch

Prior to 1982 auburn was a doormat SEC program for most of their history.

Kind or weird for a school like bama to be obsessed with a format program.

've always thought we were.

We had to build our program with Alabama (undisputed best program in CFB history and also a history of cheating) in the same state. We were the technical college for the state and not a state school. We've annually had one of the toughest schedules in college football, and we've certainly had the most difficult closings to the season that anyone has to play (two blue blood programs to close out the season).

We used to play Florida annually and have regularly had LSU and Tennessee on the schedule throughout our history.

Even still, we have 3 Heisman winners, multiple championships, compete very well in recruiting, and (probably most impressively) are one of the more lucrative programs in the country. Further, we've built ourselves into a reputable academic institution. Maybe not top of the line by any means, but an R1 institution that has a great track record for publishing and churning out graduates that earn a respectable income.

Not bad for being a second fiddle school in a small state in the Deep South.

First, Bama, not Auburn, has one of the nation's first engineering programs. Second, Auburn became a public college soon into its creation. Had the North not destroyed virtually all of Bama's campus during the war, the land grant school would be in Tuscaloosa, not Auburn.

Any Auburn fan talking about cheating at Bama is like a professional ho talking about impropriety on the part of an occasional slut.

Bama is also an R1 university. Bama's engineering and STEM grads have the same if not higher income to Auburn's engineering and STEM students.

In 2004 the pundits said Auburn didn’t deserve to play for the title because we played the Citadel. That made our schedule weaker than OU’s, especially considering 2 wins over the same team - UTenn. It was all bullshite. It was about TV ratings and TV ratings only. Auburn beat VA Tech convincingly in the bowl game and OU got humiliated by USC in front of the entire world in the title game.

Bama zealots like you should never complain about Auburn with their stomachs full. Auburn University and its graduates do a great job of feeding, healing, clothing and housing people all over the world. UAT is a one-trick pony with football being its raison d'etre. ... UAT football has harmed the state's progress in so many ways. You and Harvey Updyke et al are prime examples. Stop salivating over some high school quarterback considering UAT and please do something productive with your life. Get a job, volunteeer, travel just care about something worthwhile (please do not poison any trees) with the time you have left.

Not sure who this was directed to, but those trees were already dying before Updyke hastened the process. Google it if you doubt me.

I have no issue with Auburn University, just the alumni who think it is the Harvard of the South, and those who are filled with jealousy toward Bama's athletic success, its beautiful campus, greater number of top students.

Bama's athletic success (read football factory) like Dr. Frankenstein will be destroyed by the monster it has created. Also it is not surprising that a Bama zealot would think putting a truly poisonous and toxic chemical where innocent men, women and small children could have come in contact with it is OK. Yes indeed it is obvious how Bama football has made you a better person.

That's probably why we went out of our way to play schools like USC, Notre Dame and Nebraska in the regular season back during the 70s.

Didnt know Bama was the only SEC school that scheduled tough OOC games back then. Can you post some of the other schools OOC who had tougher conference opponents than Bama did so we can compare? This information by itself is worth absolutely nothing.
