Auburn FB historically: most underrated SEC program?

They have 8 SEC titles which is tied for 5th with Florida and two NCs. They rank 4th or 5th in most SEC all time achievement lists. However, they've also had four undefeated seasons and 1983 could've easily been an NC.
But most importantly, think of their annual schedules: before 1992 they played Bama, UGA, UF and Tenn (who was good back then) every year! In 1992 they replaced UT with LSU (more difficult opponent every year since 2001). In 2002 they stopped playing UF every year, so that hurt their SOS some but they still play UGA annually (best East team since then). Is there another SEC program that can say they've had as hard an annual schedule?

If the state only had one program, it would have over 20 national titles.

Prior to 1982 auburn was a doormat SEC program for most of their history.

Yes I remember reading that the Birmingham area per capita is the top producer of NFL talent (NOLA was second iirc). A single MS school would be very nationally competitive too

I hate this whole site and all it’s posters. I truly wish the worst for all of you and your collective programs. Only poster worth a shite is Ms. Garrison.

I think they are fairly rated, they are Big 6 but probably toward the bottom of the Big 6

If it wasn’t for Auburn, none of you would even be. Auburn is the Alpha and the Omega.

Our SoS seems to be one of the hardest every year. just how it is

Bama got to play Vandy and MSU annually for a long time. Georgia had UMiss, UK and Vandy. LSU had MSU, UMiss and UK. Auburn had no such luxuries

SEC needs to overhaul conference scheduling

I've always thought we were.
We had to build our program with Alabama (undisputed best program in CFB history and also a history of cheating) in the same state. We were the technical college for the state and not a state school. We've annually had one of the toughest schedules in college football, and we've certainly had the most difficult closings to the season that anyone has to play (two blue blood programs to close out the season).
We used to play Florida annually and have regularly had LSU and Tennessee on the schedule throughout our history.
Even still, we have 3 Heisman winners, multiple championships, compete very well in recruiting, and (probably most impressively) are one of the more lucrative programs in the country. Further, we've built ourselves into a reputable academic institution. Maybe not top of the line by any means, but an R1 institution that has a great track record for publishing and churning out graduates that earn a respectable income.
Not bad for being a second fiddle school in a small state in the Deep South.

Looking at it objectively, Auburn also has had some serious bad luck: four undefeated seasons and only two MNCs (well maybe 2004 will be counted eventually). In 1983, one-loss Auburn played by far a tougher schedule than Miami. Otoh Florida has no undefeated seasons and 3 MNCs, LSU has two and 4 MNCs, Bama under Saban has one and 5 MNCs. I guess that comes with y'all having to work your way up in "brand recognition." Judging by past few years' recruiting rankings, I think yall are now close to being on par with the aforementioned three though

Pretty sure Auburn/UT played annually for generations until the division split in the early 90s, no?
Just have always heard about my dad talking about what a heated rivalry the two schools had back in the day.

That's probably why we went out of our way to play schools like USC, Notre Dame and Nebraska in the regular season back during the 70s.

I thought everyone knew Auburn was elite. They’re one of the few schools that can compete for national championships every decade

I think they are rather fairly acknowledged in the top 5 of SEC all time.
It is a very competitive conference and has really been that way consistently since 1980.
I think the detractor for Auburn is their boom or bust nature. They had some consistency in the 80s. But since then, they don't have back to back 10+ win seasons. In fact, they don't have a double digit win season that doesn't have a losing season within two years (+/-) of it... save for 2004, which came off of a 6 year streak of single digit win seasons, and 2018, which was bookended with 5 loss seasons
All that said, the 80s rekindled the heat of the IB rivalry, and it hasn't flamed out since.
Great all around school that has produced a lot of talent across the breadth of its athletic department.

Auburn has had more games versus the big 6 than any other team.
