I guess it was on ESPN Radio because I remember listening to most of the game after a Bela Fleck show. As I drove home I kept thinking something will happen soon. Something has to happen. I’m not sure anything is going to happen. Nothing happened.

I was looking at their 2008 schedule. Five of the seven losses were very close; easily could have been the other way, but that’s without knowing how the pace of the games were. Auburn also played preseason #1 Georgia and late season #1 Alabama, among others who were good. No shame in losing like that to West Virginia. The season before, WVU took their late season debacle out on OU in the Fiesta Bowl, and I was there for that.
If anyone would have told you Auburn fans you would be two years away from some players still on roster plus a new coach, an an all time Heisman winning all around superstar factoring into a national championship, what would you have thought at that juncture? I ask this because in 1998, OU fired John Blake after three straight losing seasons, hired Bob Stoops in December, go 7-5 in his first year, then go undefeated with a Heisman runner-up QB to a national title. If you asked any of our fans of a national title was that close, we’d be asking you to pass the shine. Hell, at OU, that Independence Bowl in 1999 was an event!

Horrendous offenses
The same auburn team that lost to Bama 36-0 (like Alabama’s highest point total all season)
The same Miss State team that lost to Ole Miss 45-0...and had like 37 total yards all game
They were inept offenses and the defenses were not actually very good

There is a great condensed version of all of the penalties and bad plays of the game with a Dolly Parton song dubbed over it on YouTube and it’s by far the funniest thing I’ve ever seen.

My favorite moment had to be when Tubs took the heaters away from the players in Morgantown because they were getting their asses kicked. Late October in Morgantown on a Thursday night, no heaters.
I was at that game. Worst game experience I have ever had. Even worse than any game I have ever been to in Athens.
I had a hotel rented in town and my wife and I left after the game, drove to North Carolina and just got another room. If Auburn played in the Super Bowl in Morgantown and I got free tickets, I would never go there again

As a State fan it is embarrassing to look back on. It was a combination of good defense and two horrific offenses.
In today’s “cancel culture “ that game would be removed from history, the film would be burned and any reference to it would be whitewashed.
Surprised nobody else has added it on the things to protest against.

Auburn’s defense started the season getting shutouts in 13 of its first 20 quarters of play.
Their numbers stayed fairly strong outside of the Iron Bowl all year. That unit was on the field the entire game, game after game. They wore down mentally and physically in each loss.

I never watched it but was it sloppy play on both sides or were the defenses really that good? Just curious because whatever it was, OU could use some of it.

Well, everyone except Ron Zook's Florida Gators. State managed to beat them just a few weeks after losing at home to Maine.
Don’t forget beating Alabama in 2006 and 2007

If Alabama finishes 7-5 in 2006 as opposed to 6-6, there's an outside chance Shula keeps his job.

Croom's philosophy was...if this offense won't work, we'll just be tough on defense.

As I have mentioned, Coach Croom did a lot of good things but he was obstinate about the offense. From what I heard , Woody McCorvey wanted to do things differently on offense but Croom would not let him.

The defenses weren't bad, but the offenses were completely atrocious.
The defenses were decent enough to keep the game low-scoring, but the fact that there wasn't a single touchdown is a testament to how many offensive mistakes and botches there were throughout the game.
What made the game legendary was that both teams had similarly horrendous offenses. There have been plenty of SEC teams throughout the years that have had offenses as bad (or maybe worse - looking at you Arkansas/Tenn), but none of them have ever quite met on the field in the way Auburn and MSU did that year.

Watch it.
It will make you feel better about your team.
