quote:42% receive a commission upon graduation, rising above 50% when you are nclude off-campus commissioning.
the actual ROTC component (the guys that actually commission) is a fraction of the corps, the rest are posers.
It Was much higher until the post Cold War military cuts of the past few decades. You cannot commission more officers than the military actually needs.
TAMU commissions more officers than any institution outside the three service academies. Each service academy commissions a bit fewer than 1000 per year. TAMU is about half that figure.
Most cadets start with the intent of taking a commission, but they get "culled" over the course of their time at TAMU. Some leave the Corps when it becomes clear that they will not be offerred a commission, but most remain in the Corps for the camaraderie and the friendships that they have made.

This. I'm not a huge fan of the corps, but the fake army argument is idiotic.

I really didn't expect a simple question to devolve into this thread, but I should have looked at the url.

Yes it does. Let it go.

The "pretend Army" stuff is tired, insulting, and something upon which you'll likely never agree to disagree.
These are the types of threads that ought to just be anchored.
They bring out nothing but angry posters who want to tear down others.
Nobody is angry.

Great. College is not the Army.

I was a nonreg in the Corps (aka a poser) for two years. When we invaded Iraq, I enlisted, did two tours as a USAF explosive ordnance disposal tech. Then I went back and finished my last two years as a civilian.
Many of my friends did the same, some (too many) aren't here. The Corps of Cadets taught me shite about brotherhood, management and getting tougher when life gets tough that you can't learn anywhere. Most of which was directed by the military officers from each unit's service branch.
Also, there's some bizarre traditions to be sure, but they were ours. Most of them go back as far as when A&M was a small all male military college organized primarily by a former Confederate general and Comanche fighter named Sul Ross. We have male Yell Leaders because that's a tradition that goes back to before we even had girls in attendance.
Everyone who goes into combat "plays army" at one point or another beforehand. Im not sure what qualifies you to judge either. You're probably a little pussy who would have been crying for his mommy in your first week in the Corps.

So you are saying aTm commissions 500 a year? I find that hard to believe. I would say your numbers are closer to 200.

Not everyone in the Air Force fixes jets.

Well for people in the actual army, this "playing" you speak of is called training.

Thats a tough job. I worked with AF EOD for many many months. Top notch awesome guys.

Again, that is fantastic. However, people in the actual army learn these same things, from the same kinds of people. Going to TAMU, VMI, or the service academies is a great way to learn this stuff. They are not, however, the same as being in the army.

And not everyone who carries a gun is a warfighter.

This is what makes tRant, tRant. For better or for worse.

500 would be more than the entire senior class, so yeah - probably closer to 200.
I was one of those who was commissioned, and though I didn't do anything to distinguish myself in the Army I've always been puzzled by the "fake army" comments. There wasn't anything fake about it.

This has nothing to do with the rant. I literally know hundreds of people who would split thier sides laughing at the notion that attending TAMU as a cadet, or participating in ROTC or attending a service academy is the same as being in the Army.
The army is the army. Rotc is rotc, west point is west point. Deal with it. Nobody is threatening your manhood or accomplishments.

That's what the corps produces.
