In the 2000s and early 2010s today would feel like Christmas day to me a month after the last football game would be played. The Bash at the Baton Rouge River Center had a great atmosphere.

December signing period is probably better for kids and the programs itself (which is really all that matters). But holy frick is it anticlimatic as a fan.

I know I'm getting old so maybe it just seems like nothing is as good as it once was in college football. But I'm starting to think it's just not as good as it once was.

It’s like we lost a national holiday.

The coaches have to hate ESD. Now that 12 teams are getting ready for their first playoff game only a few days after ESD they will learn to hate it more. Ironically, it needs to be right where it historically has been, TODAY.

National Signing Day was just a construct for the haves to control the have nots.

ESD is a great idea. The placement of it is horrible.

The real answer is move early NSD to before the season starts. That allows the kids that are truly committed to your program to get their commitment out of the way before football season starts. Then have a second signing day after the season. That allows for most of the coaching changes to settle out before kids sign.

A lot of issues that we currently have with college football is that we have listened to the fans, players and coaches on the margins.

10 plus years ago, fans and coaches were clamoring for an early signing day. They whined that players should be paid. They whined that kids should be able to transfer if a coach got fired.

Now those same people are wining like girls because the early signing day happens before the portal opens. They are whining about NIL.

At some point, the NCAA needs to just let it be. Stop changing for changes sake. Stop listening to the whining and say these are the rules, and if you don’t like it, form a NFL team.

I got to go to the Bayou Bash the year we got Sam Montgomery. I think 2009. It really was a cool experience. But at least I can say I went one time.

The players want to cash their checks before Christmas. Nobody cares about the fans. Just keep giving more money and shut the frick up.

This is the problem with society in general. The Internet has allowed fringe groups to punch way, way above their weight simply by being unceasingly vocal on social media. Society has morphed in some very strange ways because of it. I am legit concerned for what the world may be like in twenty years. It will be unrecognizable.

You can definitely tell you've never made any official recruiting trips by this statement.

I'm with ya OP.

It seemed like the only thing of real significance in the sports world that I cared about after the bowl games (which now feel meaningless) and March Madness.

This is silly. Early enrollees wouldn't have the opportunity to participate in spring practices.

NSD was dead anyway. Signing is just the first step in a player evaluating his worth for a higher NIL and then bolting for bigger bucks.

Most athletes aren't getting full rides or nil money.

Signing usually implies that they are accepting an offer.

I'm not aware of any division 1 football programs at this point in time that offer anything less than a full ride.

Walk-ons are a different story entirely, but top programs usually require that an athlete have a good enough skill set to be assigned a roster space.

The early signing day hurts teams competing for conference championships and playoff spots. Layering the transfer portal on that is a cluster f*ck.

But... the early signing day, coupled with kids being able to enroll early, is a huge benefit, for some. Kids have to be good students to graduate early and enroll early.

Sark put an emphasis on recruiting players who can enroll early, with ~ 3/4's of the 2024 class already enrolled and on campus.

He spoke of going into the spring 4-deep, enough to have two 11 v. 11 practices , the 1's v. 3's, and the 2's v. 4's.

More players practicing and not standing around.

It is signing day for 23 other sports as well. They greatly outnumber the football players y'all make all your judgments off of.

Went to the bash for a decade+. Would leave lockport before daylight. Went with a few guys from Lafourche parish water. Mike Detillier was one of the gang. Got in free with WWL press pass.

Heard a story that a school from the big sent a few people down to check it out. Wanted to know if they could do something similar up there. After the 1st hour or so they left. They felt there was noway they could pull off anything comparable.

Thought the other sports signing day started something in the spring.
