"An industry source told The Athletic that Rees had eyed this shot at the sport’s summit a year ago when Notre Dame promoted Marcus Freeman from defensive coordinator to head coach. Rees wanted to be considered for that job more than he ultimately was, which spurred him to figure out how he could be in better position next time around. Two programs came to mind for Rees. The one that just hired him and the one he’s been hired to beat in the SEC Championship Game." Rees

Appears that he sees the move as the best way to position himself to be a head coach in the future. Kind of reminds me of Kirby in 2010 in a reverse way.

Kirby was talked out of going to Georgia at least partially because he'd be helping Richt keep a job that he would like to have.

Rees leaving makes the ND head coach possibly more vulnerable. He does well at Bama, could be on the short list for the job if it comes open again.

I thought Tim Brown was harsh on Rees

quote:

“This is a great day for Irish football and maybe even a better day for Tommy Rees,” Brown tweeted. “I've been around a lot of offenses, but the Irish offense last year, with maybe the exception of the North Carolina game, was extremely predictable. Seeing the offense struggle told me at least two things. 1) Tommy was very dependent on Kelly and more important, he didn't have the ability to dissect a defense. "What we saw is what I call HERO ball! You have a player(mayer) who is better than the person covering and you throw him the ball a zillion times. Make him the hero. If that doesn't work you lose. I was at a couple of games where it took everything in me not to go knock on the booth window and say give me the call sheet!!! Lol! I truly wish him well, he's gonna need it! Let's Go Irish!”

How long has it been since the head coaching position at Notre Dame was considered the summit of the sport? 40 years?

Yep. Wise move by him, for sure. I hope it works out for all parties.

ND is a summit for northeastern elites.

But it ain’t THE summit, as you correctly say, here.

ND is in an adapt-or-die mode and they aren’t adapting very well…..just like the Big10 and Pac blue bloods. They all react and don’t have an original thought of their own.

Tommy Rees coached under Brian Kelly. He's never won "the big one." Alabama is screwed.

Spot on. They’re gonna have to figure something out if they want to be viable in the future.

OMG!!… I guess Alabama shouldn’t have hired Kiffin or Sark because neither had ever “won the big one.”

Let me know how that requirement for hiring an assistant coach works out.

Depends on what the idea of summit is.

If you mean the top five jobs, then yeah, it's not that.

If you mean a top ten job in terms of compensation? Yeah, it's that.

It doesn't seem you can win a title there, but can you make the playoff annually? With 12 teams now making it, yes.

I can’t find the article I read up on Rees, but the comment it made was that Rees is a high end coordinator, but needs upper echelon talent to prove it. How did guys like Grubb or Garrett put up numbers without 4/5 stars?

quote:

Should Rees-led Tide offenses light up the scoreboard, he would have the satisfaction of proving to all of the Notre Dame fans and media that have questioned him along the way (including me), that he is indeed terrific at his job but needed upper-echelon talent for it to truly show.

Here is the article from Outkick discussing what Brown said and why he's wrong.

quote:

Why did Tim Brown feel the need to attack him? His attack isn’t even rooted in truth. Last season, Notre Dame had to roll with Drew Pyne at QB for pretty much the whole season because starter Tyler Buchner only played two regular season games. It’s not like Rees was rolling with his regular lineup, and no offense to Pyne, but his skillset is definitely not as elevated as the offense built for Buchner.

As a Notre Dame legend, Tim Brown should know these obvious facts. He just chose to ignore them while launching an unprovoked attack on Rees.
quote:

The idea Rees is a terrible OC, but somehow still good enough for Nick Saban – the greatest college coach ever – is comical. It’s simply not true.

here's the best line in the article:

When Brian Kelly begged Rees to join him in Baton Rouge, the former Notre Dame quarterback stayed put, much to Kelly’s aggravation.

so corndog nation, is Kelly as dumb as Saban?
