Are teams going to have to keep failing coaches forever due to these exploding salaries?

Most coaches are getting paid $10 million now, so I don't see how teams will be able to afford buyouts.

Michigan State, the first team to give a $10 million salary, basically made up an excuse to fire their coach "with cause" just a year or two later. Does anybody really think that his phone sex with a white woman was anything more than an excuse to fire him, especially since the phone sex seems to have been consensual? He's now suing for his $80 million contract money.

FSU is having to keep Norvell forever because his pay got raised to $10.3 million in order to keep Alabama away.

I'm not sure that OU will be able to fire their failing coach Venables with how they just gave him a 6 year, $10 million a year extension.

It seems like a whole bunch of teams will now be forced to keep their failing coaches until the end of their contracts or close to the end of their contracts.

My take has always been

"Why is losing games not Cause for firing?"

If your job is to win games and you can't win, then you are not doing your job.

Teams can put "performance clauses" into contracts, but few teams seem to do so.

Hopefully the market adjusts and coaches start getting variable contracts.
Like if you win less than 8 games, your buyout drops by one year. You win a playoff game and you get a 1 year ext.

Uh, I don't think they had to make much up there.

The markets have been evolving the entire time. Revenue and budgets have increased exponentially the last 20 years.

Someone will eventually pay their coach 1M the put the extra 9M into player salary. Everyone will be pickachu face when it works.

FSU is about to destroy your narrative. You obviously have no idea how restless the natives are down there. Fans will always have the final say.

The problem is coaches have all the leverage in these situations.

When LSU and Florida were both gunning for Lane do you think he was going to accept a contact where he can be fired for cause for losing football games? Nope.

Being restless is one thing, having the financial means to do anything about it is very much another.

Only cost and revenue have evolved. That and adding fully guaranteed contracts. AD's have made it to where your offer has to be guaranteed or close to it to be considered. It ridiculous. I think Saban's contract is the only fully guaranteed contract that wasn't bought out. Less than 5% reach their expiration date. I read that since 2004, FBS schools have paid over $1B in buyouts. That's stupid.

Fans buy tickets and provide NIL. You are underestimating just how toxic Tallahassee is right now. And people spend their money on what's most important to them. Jimbo could even be on the other side of a mega buyout and be invited home on a sweetheart deal.

Arkansas feels like much the same if Georgia just destroys that team Saturday. They seem to be hitting the saturation point with disappointment and failure. You don't often see a one-year wonder, even today, but you will if the Razorbacks go South and stop being competitive.

LSU fans have said money isn't an issue at all for LSU.

I can see giving huge contracts to guys like Saban and Smart AFTER they were delivering championships, but the guaranteed money for coaches who haven’t is ridiculous.

Biddings wars for not Sabans and not Kirbys are ridiculous too.

It’s all such a crapshoot. Take a chance on an up and coming coach instead of overpaying a retread.

Just don’t hire Lane or any other such coach via such a process.

Why spend $10m on a coach’s salary when you could invest that money in recruiting players?

I think coaching probably matters more now than it ever has. It's getting harder and harder to overwhelm someone like Louisville just on talent.

Whoever came up with coaches' buyouts (prob Jimmy Sexton) needs to be punched in the nuts. It has to be a kickback scheme and really needs to be investigated.

FSU isn't an A&M or LSU. They would still owe Norvell $51 million after this season and he gets 85% up front. And the timing couldn't have been worse to spend $450 million like they just did with stadium and facility renovations in the NIL era.
THEN they would need a war chest for a new HC and staff. THEN they still need a war chest to get out of the ACC.
