Dumb category. A team could be ranked 3rd preseason and finish 4th and be "overrated", just bc media talking heads felt like putting them there to begin with.

How is this calculated? The link in the tweet is behind a paywall.
As an example, here's USC 2014-2024:

2014: 14/20
2015: 8/NR (8-6)
2016: 20/3
2017: 4/12
2018: 15/NR (5-7)
2019: NR/NR
2020: 20/21
2021: 16/NR (4-8)
2022: 14/12
2023: 6/NR (8-5)
2024: 23/NR (7-6)

Auburn isn’t ranked, yet they’re overrated?

OK.

ETA: Ah, since 2014. Thanks Gus.

I think it's probably just a Preseason/Postseason comparison so to your point, Bama, OSU, UGA are overrated if they don't finish top 5 annually.

Interesting to see the list though and show that the SEC as a whole may be overranked in the pre-season overall (not picking on individual teams)

So it’s the team’s fault that a bunch of AP morons ranked them a certain number preseason? This should reflect more on AP Preseason rankings than anything

Looks like it is since 2014. Auburn AP ranking preseason/final by season.

14: #6/19 (-13)
15: #6/nr (-20)
16: nr/#24 (+2)
17: #12/10 (+2)
18: #9/nr (-17)
19: #16/14 (+2)
20: #11/nr (-15)
21: nr/nr
22: nr/nr
23: nr/nr
24: nr/nr

Auburn was preseason top 12 five times. Three of those seasons they finished unranked. Only three times did they finish better than their preseason rank, each time by two spots.

When Auburn was underrated, they were barely underrated. When they were overrated they imploded like the Titan submarine.

I see a lot of SEC national championships on this graphic since 2014 so i guess they were not overrated.

That era is so frustrating though. What could've been if

-The supposed QB guru goes with Kyle Trask from the start instead of waiting for Franks to get hurt
-Grantham doesn't come to GVille with Mullen
-That fricking shoe being thrown

Good God. I had no idea it was this bad. Should y'all have kept Mullen?

I don't even care about perennial top 5s making the list like Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State. They never can make up the ground others do that start out at ten or worse. A lot easier to be over ranked than under when you are that high. But if you are generally in the 15 to 25 range that has some significance.
