In fairness to Arkansas, they got robbed in ‘64. At the time, AP and UPI (Modern day Coaches poll) awarded the MNC before bowl games.

Arkansas wound up being the only undefeated after the bowls.

Any season after 1971 they would have been undisputed champs.

Fun tidbit about that:

After 1964, everyone complained (Alabama won the title because regular season is what mattered), so they changed it.

So in 1965 they instituted the "after the bowls" rule.

#1 Michigan State loses to #5 UCLA 14-12
#2 ARKANSAS loses to #14 LSU 14-7
#4 Alabama beats #3 Nebraska 39-20

Alabama wins the national title.

They remove the "After the bowls" rule just in time to ensure that 1966 goes to a team that refused to play in bowls at the time, Notre Dame.

I've always found the "if you lost the bowl game it shouldn't count" crowd deeply amusing because they never say the same thing for teams that refused to play in them or were banned from playing them.

Then why start this thread? If history is so uninteresting to you?

They didn't get robbed in '64, that was the way it was done back then. Not near the amount of bowl games as now, and it was more of a goof off vacation and pleasure outing for the team's invited. Not near as serious as today, the regular season was what mattered.

Plenty of MNC winners lost their bowl games.

I think the UPI didn't change until after the 1973 or 1974 season.

What does Ole Miss, Kentucky, State, Missouri, Arkansas, and Vanderbilt have in common?
