I've also got a good friend down there. He was looking to get him and his daughter out yesterday. He lives between Eldridge and Cypress. I haven't heard back from him since yesterday. I'm praying for all of Houston. It's a sad situation

The have the bridges over Spring Creek closed off in both directions to all traffic. I tried to get over to Creekside yesterday, but there was no way in from the North. The bridges at Gossling, Kuykendahl and FM 2978 were blocked and not allowing any traffic. Said Spring Creek was so high that it was pushing against the bottom of the bridges, so they closed them out of precaution. Also said that Spring Creek had overflowed its banks and the entire area South of Spring Creek was flooded, so the roads were under water on that side and there was no were to go if you did cross.

Any suggestions on what we can do to help from afar?

I know the University of Houston is collecting some stuff that you can ship to them and I'm not crazy about donating to Red Cross.

BB1977,
Did your friend make it out?
My BIL is currently doing boat rescues in Cypress.

That is basically what I have been reading. As soon as those go down and I can get to my house, I am going back. I'll bring supplies from the road and go take a shift at a church. Unfortunately, my church is flooded.

From one of our local stations: How to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey

That's a start.

Thank y'all so much.

No words for this mess.

For the most part, everything up here in The Woodlands on the North Side of Houston is doing better than downtown and to the West and South sides. They opened up the flood gates on the damn North of us early on, so Lake Woodlands is higher than I've ever seen it, but staying in the designated flood plains.

Hoping you're still ok, 1BIG.
We just got word that my aunt and cousins have been evacuated by boat from their house in Kingwood (which took on water overnight).
So the north side is starting to get stung.
Sounds like you're off 45 (probably west of the interstate) and not 59, but that west fork of the San Jac river runs near The Woodlands.

I live a mile from downtown in the East End. Even though it's flat here, it never floods and we haven't been in danger at any time during all of this. Power/water hasn't been interrupted at all and people are driving around like normal. I feel for all of you who are suffering right now or have friends/loved ones who are. I have several coworkers who have suffered flood damage.

I saw a comment about downtown being flooded--we went to George R. Brown to drop off donations yesterday morning and downtown was doing fine. If it is flooding then that's a very recent development but it was very drivable when we were there and we were in a pussified SUV.

One bright spot in all this for everyone to remember is the efforts of the first responders and public (like some of you on here) who are all pitching in to help out in any way they can. It's unfortunate to hear about the Cajun Navy and first responders coming under fire, but know that there is a great deal of good happening during a horrible situation.

Does anybody know how Montrose is fairing? I called a friend that lives there yesterday and haven't heard back from him yet.

montrose generally does not get flooded to the same extent as southwest/spring/northeast/etc ... allison flooded it overnight and lots of people had to sleep in bars overnight, but the water was gone in the morning ... i think most of montrose was probably ok based on a few posts i've seen on fb ... been told midtown was ok for the most part ... specs on smith was open the past few days ...

This is my aunt's backyard 2 hours ago in Kingwood (NE Houston).
You can barely make out their pool on the left side of the photo, under the water.
Just beyond the tree line is Lake Houston.
They evacuated by boat, as the water has finally breached the house.

If you'll humor me for a moment (or ignore my post if it's not your thing), I'd like to respond to those asking how they can help: Pray.

Pray for People in the Flooded Areas
Protection of all life, including family pets
Safe transportation to safe areas
Dry, comfortable lodging, safe drinking water, and nutritious food
Quick reunion for any separated families
Long-term housing for those who have lost homes
Ability to communicate with extended family and friends

Pray for Rescue Efforts by First Responders/Emergency Personnel
Reliable cell and phone service so citizens can summon help
Good, reliable communication between agencies
Safety for police officers, firemen, and emergency medical personnel
Strength, stamina and wisdom as they respond to the overwhelming need
Additional manpower from outside the area to meet the need

Pray for Ongoing Relief Efforts
Plenty of volunteer teams and government groups to respond to the need
Physical strength and stamina for the disaster relief teams
Coordination of all volunteer efforts so there will be no gaps and all needs will be met
Enough resources – money, supplies, equipment, food, and water – to meet the needs
Protect the resources from theft, fraud, and accident

Pray for Physical Conditions
Protection from additional rain and tornadoes
Open passages for built up/backed up water to safely drain away
Plenty of sources for clean drinking water
Clear roadways for emergency personnel

Done. And will continue to be done.

If any of y'all need somewhere to go, or you have family needing some place to stay, my cousin lives in the Abilene area and is opening his home to anyone who needs it. He will provide transportation to and from wherever they are at to his home. He also has a boat and has headed to the Houston area to assist with rescues and said if anyone has family needing a way out, he is willing to do all he can to get to them.

Just let me know and I will give you my email or twitter and you can dm me and I will pass the info along to him.
