A&M’s handling of Sumlin is an example of what’s wrong with CFB: The Saban Affect

We’re seeing a lot of coaches being let go after putting together decent tenures at schools. Kevin Sumlin seems like a victim of his own success. It wasn’t too long ago where a season like he had, 8-4, was considered a successful season at A&M. I’m not really sure Kevin Sumlin is a good or bad coach, but he was having decent success. Certainly good for what A&M standards should be.

Sumlin comes in, and wins 10 games with Johnny Manziel, and people all of sudden think A&M should be a juggernaut?

I think Saban has ruined college football. Teams of non championship pedigree now expect championship or bust every season. A&M has had success on the field and recruiting under Sumlin but they think they deserve championships? They’re the 3rd best program in their own state.

Fleck, who shouldn’t even have gone to Minnesota because his stock was higher than their pedigree is now getting a lot of heat because they’re not world beaters in his first season. If they’d give that guy enough time, he could probably make Minnesota a Wisconsin-like power in the BIG10.

We’re seeing a lot of this, and it seems that the game is burning through a lot of coaches due to ridiculous expectations. In my opinion, that’s what’s driving the coaching salaries and buyouts through the roof. Coaches don’t have a sense of security anymore so agents/coaches are maximizing profits because there’s no such thing as loyalty in cfb anymore. It’s bad for the game, and paying a coach 75 million is only going to drive prices up more for the fans to pay for these ridiculous contracts.

TL;DR
Lack of job security, due to over high expectations by 2nd tier programs (A&M) are driving coaching salaries and prices up. It’s bad for the game and it’s bad for fans. Frick you A&M for thinking you’re better than you are.

Only if you cherrypick stats would you think sumlin was doing a good job but I'm not going to waste time debating it any further.

Sumlin wasn't fired solely due to the mediocre record. It was both the manner in which he achieved that record (4 consecutive late season collapses), his horribly flawed "all in" recruiting strategy and his mishandling of the QB situation on three seperate occasions.

We may have finished 8-4 a lot, but by the end of those seasons we were legitimately playing like one of the worst teams in America.

You really don't know what you're talking about. Stick to analyzing your own team

Saban didn't ruin anything. He does his job and wins.

I think Clemson has contributed to this, perhaps more than Bama. Alabama is one of the all time greatest programs in college football history. When theyre good, its not that surprising. However, when historically mediocre teams like Clemson come along and suddenly start competing for titles consistently, most programs take a "Why not us?" view. And I think it's a legitimate question for a great many programs.

I agree with this

A&M has more money, a larger fanbase, better facilities, fertile recruiting base and prior to Dabo more historical success and a better winning % than Clemson. Arguing we have no right to hope for better is nonsense. Every school with great resources and the ability to recruit is always one coach away.

Auburn started it. They had to cheat because they got jelly of Alabama.

Then they fired their national championship coach after a few years.

Would LSU retain a head coach who started 25-6 and finished 26-20?

I love the argument of “they should know their place” or “historically that’s about where they’ve been, why should they expect better?”

It’s like nobody is allowed to try to make their football team better and win a national championship. Let’s just all sit around and let Bama, Ohio st, and Clemson play for it every year and the rest of us do nothing.
