He would be a great hire. Young and sharp, can do more with less.

Now hearing that Durkin and Ole Miss are renegotiating. I’d expect closure on this one way or the other in the next couple of days. A&M and Durkin got pretty far down the road so I’ll be a little surprised if he stays.

Still going to go with him leaving for A&M but haven't heard much on it today.

For Aggie fans, yes, Ole Miss gave up a lot of yards this year. I believe we finished #100 in the country in yards per game. That said, we finished 51st in the country in PPG. I believe we were near 120 last season, so that's a +70 spot increase in one season. It's no secret that Ole Miss doesn't have the most talent on defense.

Another thing about Durkin is half time adjustments. Even on games where Ole Miss shite the bed defensively (Alabama, Auburn) in the 1st half, Durkin made great adjustments at the half and gave our offense plenty of time to get back in those games.

Did he?

Alabama's first 3 drives of the 2nd half

- 6 plays, 77 yards, Touchdown (Alabama leads 35-0)
- 11 plays, 59 yards, Interception in the red zone (Alabama leads 35-7)
- 9 plays, 66 yards, Touchdown (Alabama leads 42-7)

202 yards on 26 plays and 4.7 PPD over a 20 minute stretch of football is pretty dominating. I don't remember any point in that game where Ole Miss put up any semblance of resistance, 1st or 2nd half.

If it’s him he big question will be if he is going to convert to a 3 man front w all that line talent coming in

I’m pretty sure it’s him, and I’m even more sure we’ll play most snaps with 4 DL.

Durkin let Calzada get A&M within striking distance before he shite the bed.

I misremebered. Thought it was 35-0 at the half. Either way all of the schematic changes in the world wasn't going to help that talent gap.

Oh yea, agree. Durkin is a very good DC. Alabama was just patient and disciplined enough to stick with their plan (very similar to what we did against Cincinnati) and not get cute.

Plus, Ole Miss clearly got better defensively as the year went on.

You and many of the most respected names in CFB agree with you.

Jimbo’s hires at DC were Stoops, Pruitt, Keely and Elko.

I thought he ran a lot of the 3 stack stuff (the Iowa State stuff) at Ole Miss this year, but has traditionally been a 4 down guy. Am I mistaken?

I think he transitioned due to need. Originally he had 4 man fronts at Florida & Michigan.

He ran 3-3-5 because of personnel

He's done a little bit of everything between Florida, Michigan and Maryland, I think. His base template was under Muschamp so it's origins are with Saban and the 3-4, but these days everybody has to do so many variations depending on opponent. They ran a lot of 4 man fronts at Florida and Michigan.

Here is an interesting deep dive from his Florida defenses (before he took the Michigan DC job in 2015). Obviously football has changed quite a bit since then, so who knows how applicable it still is.

I think he ran a variation of the 4-2-5 last year. I'm pretty sure we also ran some 3 man fronts last year. Ole Miss' lack of DL depth and surplus of depth at DB led to a transition to the ISU 3-2-6 stack this year.

Biggest issue with Durkin as a playcaller this year was the tendency to not bring pressure and just rush a 3 man front. Sam Williams made it work but we were over halfway through the season before we started really bringing some exotic looks using safeties and CBs.

You won't out money A&M. They spend cash like a drunken sailor. Usually the people they hire tend to coach like drunken sailors, but the Aggies love to waste lots of money.
