I’m trying to figure out why the base runner was called out by the batted ball? The rule is once it passes a fielder the ball is dead, and runners advance one base. That ball passed the first base player, then hit the runner, so no interference in the ability of the fielder catching the ball.

Yeah, but bad call. Once it went past the first baseman the runner's not out.

Probably doesn't matter, but isn't losing in the finals the worst possible scenario?

Nah, the first regional round of the NCAA tournament is pretty much a breeze for the top-seeded teams.
