And I'm sure nowhere in the history of the world did an Alabama homer, uh, voter vote another team incredibly low just to boost Alabama's poll vote.

BTW, how is that 1976 Reader's Digest national championship treating you?

ND lost to Ole Miss in September. Early loss and they were able to win out.
As a State fan, I don’t consider it a bad loss for ND. Great win for OM but considering the weather and OM had a talented , capable team. A mild upset but not shocking at all.

Equivalent to State beating Texas in 1991. A mild upset but not shocking at all.

Notre Dame is IMO the undisputed champion in 1977. No question about it.

I actually lived in Arkansas at the time and everyone I knew felt like Bama should be #1.

Bama was the top team that came out of the bowl games undefeated. They beat a quality opponent.

Arkansas played a whale of a game but they didn’t deserve to jump Bama and Notre Dame, which the polls did get right.

The problem for Arkansas is that we started the season unranked. Our season was nearly identical to Oklahoma's, but OU was #1 in the preseason AP, so they only needed to beat us to win the championship. That we beat them, and were treated differently, is proof that preseason polls matter.

I have probably been around more years than you. I was alive and well in 1977. I am a State alum and fan so for me to defend Ole Miss means I am not BS’s anything here.

Between the lines , if you read my whole post, I mentioned that ND lost in September and then won out. Early losses typically did not hurt contenders over the years. Because of the heat in Jackson that day and the fact OM was a decent team, it was not a bad loss as was evidenced by the pollsters after the bowl games. They ranked them #1 and rightly so.
Arkansas, Bama, ND, Penn State and Texas were all 11-1 and all could claim a NC.
But it all comes down to timing. ND lost its game earlier in the year and fair or not in those days if you were going to lose a game, it was much better to lose it in September.

Plus they were overall the best team that year. So that is why I said no question they were the best team. Their overall resume was clearly better than the other four teams.

True and if any team has a claim other than ND , then it is Bama. After all they beat the team (Ole Miss) that beat ND.
Would have been interesting if Bama and ND could have played each other post bowl.
That would have been a heck of a game.

Still I think they got it right.

Back when sportswriters with short memories were the kingmakers in college football, any team with a national following could lose an early game to a mediocre team like Ole Miss and still be crowned champion. This is one more reason why we now have the playoff system. The next time a conference champion claims that being a conference champion qualifies them for a playoff spot, all the committee has to say is, "You lost to Iowa by 31 points."

Bama got screwed. Period, end of story. We were prescribing Ohio state in the sugar. At the same time we were hearing in the superdome Texas was losing to NUMBER FKN FIVE Notre dame. We watched Oklahoma get bounced that night and we were now gonna be national champs. Guy watching the game with us said those bastards will vote Notre dame number one. I Said all the way from 5?? They lost to friggin ole miss. Well, they did jump all the way from 5. Sorry, but arkie wasn't even in the conversation.

Anyway, Total bullshite. We would have wrecked Notre dame and they know it. The biggest bullshite move by any poll at any time and led to voting being distributed evenly across America the next year.
