Now that you mention it, 1974 national champion USC lost their opening game to Arkansas 7-22. How you started the season never mattered. The only thing that counted was how you ended it.

True and if any team has a claim other than ND , then it is Bama. After all they beat the team (Ole Miss) that beat ND.
Would have been interesting if Bama and ND could have played each other post bowl.
That would have been a heck of a game.
Still I think they got it right.
shite happens. We have benefited from the bowl games(both winning and losing) having an effect on the national championship. The same thing happened to auburn in 83 that happened to Bama in 77.
Life goes on. The sun came up the next day. We've won 8 other Titles since then. No reason to dwell on it

Saints why are you so anti Catholic with a name like Saints?
Most of you younger people don’t realize that ND was a power house in those days.
They beat Bama back to back (Sugar Bowl
1973 - 24-23) and then after the 1974 season (Orange Bowl - 1975 - 13-11).
The ‘73 Sugar Bowl is considered “The Game of The Century”. So they were really good through that era.
I agree that their name helped them jump Bama but Bama’s name has helped them jump other schools over the years. It happens. Plus they skull dragged the #1 team who was unbeaten. Had it been a close game, then no way do they go all the way to #1.
I bet none of you of guys know who the starting QB was for ND in 1977?
None other than Joe Montana.

Is any decision based on human opinion justified?

And Alabama beat the team that beat Notre Dame...so you're saying Bama should've been #1?

BTW, how is that 1976 Reader's Digest national championship treating you?
Bama claims no such NCs except for the maddening one in 1941. All of the others since 1936 and the advent of the AP are wire service claims, i.e., AP and/or UP/Coaches polls. They have 12, ND is second with 8.
Bama does not claim 1977 mentioned in this thread, though there are selectors who do. Bama does not claim the 10-0 1945 Rose Bowl winning number 2 team or the only undefeated/untied team 1966 team and 2 time defending NC. In fact it does not claim 13 years where some selector(s) chose them NCs. Why they add the 1941 claim is mind-numbing. If you want to add one, though I would not, add 45 or 66.
The 4 prior to 1936 are all reasonable claims. Undefeated/united 10-0 Rose Bowl winners (the only major bowl game in the country 'til '33) except for a tie with Pop Warner's 1926 undefeated/untied Stanford team. Both claim a piece of that NC. That's 16 in all not counting the ridiculous 1941 claim.

No mention of how Arky beat OU in that ‘77 Orange Bowl?
Switzer was caught banging his DC Larry Lacewell’s wife at the team hotel the day before the game. Lacewell tipped the plays & defensive sets to Holtz’s staff.

Maybe you do, but Bama fans in general and the University do not claim any of those years.
ND had a legit claim in 1977, as did Bama, and got the vote. Bama has had years where the reverse was true. You have a way of selecting a champ, you know what it is, and you take your best shot knowing and you live with the outcome. ND was the 1977 champ, not Bama. Frankly, in any year, even with playoffs, even when teams play head-to-head, much of the time it is difficult to say who really has the "best" team. Again, you have a process and you live with the outcome. Nothing wrong with trying to improve the process. But if you can't live with it, don't participate.

But it all comes down to timing. ND lost its game earlier in the year
Alabama's lone loss was a loss to Nebraska, in Lincoln, in the second game of the season. In fact...Alabama and Notre Dame suffered their only loss on the exact same day (September 17).

Bama to what top 5 10 nebraska by a TD...ND blowed out by 2 tds to a future 5 6 team

Indeed.
Alabama's first opponent of 1977 was Ole Miss, who they beat 34-13. The very next week, we lost in Lincoln to a Top 10 Nebraska team by a single touchdown. That same Ole Miss team we had just beaten by three scores upset Notre Dame in Jackson.
