Why in the heck did we not decide to claim the title in 1945? We lost 2 ball games in 1941. Vandy and Miss st. Let me say that again, Vandy and Miss St. I know Vandy was somewhat of a powerhouse back in the day. But Jeez! Vandy and Miss St!
On top of that, Miss St has only 1 SEC Title. And guess what year that was. Right,,,,, 1941!

There was a bit of a groundswell campaign to give it to Army for their off the field achievements that year

Hell yes. They beat Italy, Germany, and Japan in back to back to back contests.

I don't suppose I'll get much support from Bama fans.

Because we didn't give up when Germany bombed Pearl Harbor ?

That Army team in '45 was loaded, including 2 future Heisman winners...not to mention that they had also won the title in '44 with practically the same team...

Only thing I can gather is that the world was at war, everyone's attention turned, and Alabama says, "hey, let's claim this title while no one's looking or really cares".

Why or why... In 1983 they only claimed 6, then... They added 5 and adding 1941 lets us laugh at all of them.

Most reasonable objective Bama fans (Yes, I know there aren't many)will admit that we realistically have about 9 or 10 championships, not 15. Hell, I don't even claim '73, much less '41. I was told this story a long time ago as to why we claim '41 and some of the others: The Bama coach (don't remember which one)on the recruiting trail wanted to tell prospects that we had more national championships than Notre Dame. He had the athletic dept. find some more titles that we could claim, thus 1941 and 15 total today. It stuck and that's where we are today. What's the old saying, tell a lie long enough and everyone will believe it. Sorry fellow Bama fans, sometimes the truth hurts

Denying your own team's hard-won championships? You, sir, are the college football equivalent of a white apologist.
...seriously, though, 1941 is a sham. Just change the claim to 1966 and get it over with.

What about 1973, the first "playoff".
One service names Bammer. One name Notre Dame.
They meet in the Sugar Bowl to decide who is the best. ND wins.
Bammer still tries to claim the national championship.
