you serious about all that Clark or is that an exaggeration?

I'm dead serious. I don't think a lot of people realize how pissed off many alumni are at the University. The school is unrecognizable to anyone over the age of 35. Years of smug indifference from the administration toward alumni and other supporters is coming home to roost.

Wow. Thanks for the response. And you’re right, the version of OM that I’m currently attending is vastly different than the one my parents and grandparents went to.
IMO it seems that the administration, for some unknown reason, prioritizes out of state folks and just sorta says frick em to the Mississippi people. It’s turned a lotttt of local (ne ms) alumni I know away from supporting them because of it.

I'm all for it. This would be cool AF. People could come tour the tank year round.

Could tie education dollars to it and let the Biology Department handle it to help offset costs. Would be really cool opportunity for some Marine Bio majors to manage the tank their senior year.

Also, does anyone know who the alum is that retracted a $50 million dollar pledge?

Pretty sure the only alum that has given or pledged that level of money to sports is Dr. Hollingsworth but that seems like a classic Spirivals rumor

This would be awesome.

Therefore we’ll get a nice koi pond instead and fans can feed the fishies.

For the kids.

Haha every single year there is some grumpy old bastard who says this. "Buh my sauces tell me everyone is pulling their donations!! The end of OM athletics is near because they have (insert whatever issue they are butthurt about)."

Yes, the situation sounds quite dire....

University Reaches Three-Year High in Fundraising

quote:

Private support to the University of Mississippi during fiscal year 2020 soared to more than $127.2 million, up 26 percent from the previous fiscal year, despite challenges brought on by a global pandemic.

More than 22,000 alumni and friends supported academics, the University of Mississippi Medical Center and Ole Miss athletics, with 3,441 new donors. Donor counts by generation show that baby boomers (born 1946 to 1964) made the most gifts, and Generation X (born 1965 to 1980) came in second. The average gift was $2,300, up from $1,600 in FY19.

For the ninth consecutive year, private support exceeded $100 million, signaling that alumni and friends believe UM students, programs and state-of-the-art facilities are worthy of major investments, Chancellor Glenn Boyce said.

What that carefully worded release doesn’t discuss is the ONLY reason for those numbers is the abnormally large donation from the Duffs which had been in the works for years. Take that pledge out and the totals show an even sharper decline and would show the five year downward trajectory even more dire -in a time of unprecedented prosperity at that. There was also a loss of over 6,700 donors , which will look mild compared to the number lost this year. Its all in the Foundation disclosures . They just assume (correctly) that people won’t delve too deep and just see what they amplify.

Oh okay got it, so in order for what you said to make sense we need to completely ignore millions of dollars. Perfect, makes sense

eta: Look we're all on the same side here and I want what's best for OM just as much as I'm sure you do. Just seems like your objectivity may have been compromised a bit because you're trying to back into a particular narrative.

I'm not saying I agree with every single change that has been made, but I will say that I do agree that we must evolve as a University in order to stay relevant with 18 - 21 year old athletes and unfortunately there will be some older fans who will not relate to or endorse these changes, but to win and recruit, evolving will be necessary.

But I'll also further qualify all that by saying if you're a fan that wants to concentrate only on traditions (dixie, colonel reb, etc.) as opposed to results on the field then you can kindly frick right off.

All I did was tell you realistically what is happening. I have many connections in Oxford and at the University and I will tell you they are extremely worried. Just because the Duffs $25 million dollar donation was able mask this trajectory a bit this year, the fact the university is in trouble. And the trouble stems from several reasons, not just because there is a lizard mascot running around on the field or any other of the athletic embarrassments that have destroyed the once envied mystique of the school and made it the laughing stock of its peers. It goes much deeper than that, most especially Ole Miss not recruiting Mississippi kids and the couldn’t care less attitude toward alumni if they send their kids to Oxford.

It's game week, dude. Save the bitching about "muh tradishuns" for the offseason. Are you going to be watching the mascot on the sidelines or the actual game?

Knowing Ole Miss it won’t be like that picture. It’ll probably be more along the lines of a fish tank outside the tunnel to the locker room.

Once Ole Miss has a couple of decent seasons, the old alums that left over the monument will be replaced by younger ones donating money. This is very simple.

I disagree. By and large, even young people who can afford it are not as generous as other generations.

Normally I would agree but you have so many students from Texas and Georgia who view Ole Miss as secondary. Those out of state students will not give a done to Ole Miss

There are some very apparent trends in overall higher education giving that say otherwise. It used to be that relatively small donations from a wide base was part of an established culture of giving.

But now, the percentage of alumni giving is dropping fast. And the median (not the average) gift is actually flat. It's not going up.

The only thing that keeps overall giving going up is whales. Basically boomers who give huge sums at the end of their life. But the long term trend is that when these whales die off, the culture of giving in the subsequent generations is not nearly as strong.

Thank god for this. I thoroughly enjoy a diverse student body that isn't full of racist assholes.

Probably because we all paid 50x what they did to attend and entered a stagnant job market. I dunno. School pride falls to the wayside when you're jaded by overpriced tuition, student loans, and not having a job that pays for your degree.

Thank God that not all of us are filled with this much self contempt and hatred of the decent people who raised us.
