Mississippi Code 55-15-81 provides that streets named in honor of military units, organizations or events may not be renamed. This would certainly include a street serving a Confederate cemetery, named in memory of the men interred therein.

quote:

The relevant code section reads as follows:
(1) None of the following items, structures or areas may be relocated, removed, disturbed, altered, renamed or rededicated: Any Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican-American War, War Between the States, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, War in Iraq or Native American Wars statues, monuments, memorials or nameplates (plaques), which have been erected on public property of the state or any of its political subdivisions, such as local, municipal or county owned public areas, and any statues, monuments, memorials, nameplates (plaques), schools, streets, bridges, buildings, parks preserves, reserves or other public items, structure or areas of the state or any of its political subdivisions, such as, local, municipal or county owned public areas, which have been dedicated in memory of, or named for, any historical military figure, historical military event, military organization or military unit.

FTR, I have no problem with Ole Miss renaming Confederate Drive. It's just going to be embarrassing when this gets blown out of proportion by the national media when the university gets sued for doing (or attempting to do )this.

Which military unit, organization or event is the street named for?

The Confederate States of America was a political entity. It had a military, but I'm not sure that counts.

Was the street named in honor or just given a name? There is a difference.

Just rename it Chucky Mullins drive and move on... We have a 2+ story high Confederate soldier monument entering the circle.

I would hope that everyone would choose to honor an Ole Miss Football legend who died due to playing for our school over naming it Confederacy Drive. But that's just me.

Eh, I'm not buying it.

Unless they have some sort of proof that the drive was actually named for the confederate military, then I don't see this being any sort of issue whatsoever.

I was under the impression they were naming Coliseum Drive after Chucky, not Confederate Drive?

It was named confederate drive because it led to the confederate cemetery. It doesn't anymore. The Tad Pad did away with that. The only thing it leads to now is the Chapel which is what it will be called.

What's left that could possibly be offensive? They need to round up a list and just get everything changed asap. It's really tiring reading these stories year after year.

ETA: Oh and I'm indifferent to the changes. I just want to get it done and move on.

Somebody please tell me we aren't going to leave that building standing after the new arena gets built?

They have discussed changing "rebels" as well.

It will happen too. It is a process. It will take time but it will happen.
