I realize stats don't tell the whole story and they can be used to make either side of pretty much any argument. Context is everything. BUT...I'm not sure this view that MacIntyre is setting the world on fire while Rich Rod needs a ticket on the next bus out of town is based on facts. No doubt the defense is improved, and at times it looks fantastic, but even with that the "land shark defense" sits at #83 among the FBS in total defense. Conversely, the much-maligned offense comes in at #49 in total offense, and a very impressive #19 in rushing offense. Is there a single one among us who would have bet $5 this year's Rebel team would feature a TOP 20 rushing game?? And while the Rebel D is pretty good against the run (#34), they are absolutely miserable against the pass, ranking #117 (130 teams total in the FBS). Another interesting difference between the offense and defense is the former ranks #17 in first down yardage, while the D ranks #125 in first down defense. That means opponents spend a lot of time in 2nd- and 3rd-and-short, which is a massive benefit from a strategic/play-calling perspective. There are just so many options in short-yardage situations. And it beats a defense down.
All I'm saying is I don't think we should be booking Rod a trip out of Oxford just yet.

I think that MM has done a good job simply because the D continues to progress and he's not working with a lot of talent.
I never liked the RR hire. The game passed him by years ago and he's failed at big time schools. He's not that great of a coach.
Luke... why are we paying him at all much less $3.x million per year?

Well we do run the ball 99% of the time
Posted on 10/22/19 at 1:38 pm to umrebel2009
I’m not sure why we can’t run slant routes, or god forbid a deep post. Seems like Elijah Moore would be ideal for both of those routes. The post probably isn’t there with our offensive line and QB tendency to throw outside of the pocket, but a slant route? Come on.
Edit: I saw a couple In routes this past Saturday and both appeared to be completions.

How about some TE passes? I don't think we've used our TE one time this season. I could be wrong.

Cooley has caught a few balls but not nearly enough. If I were him, I’d be pissed.

Everyone shite all over Longo for his neglect of the TE and here we are as RR is doing the same

Cooley is on track to have 3x receptions this year vs. last. He and Pellerin have a combined 19 receptions this year.

Point taken but still not enough for Cooley especially when our QBs struggle to complete deeper passes.

I totally agree with the last few posts about TEs! No specific offensive strategy has perplexed me more than the utter FAILURE to integrate tight ends. I can sort of understand why a TE wouldn't feature large in a Longo offense - at least on paper - especially when you have the best WR corps in the country (and one of the best all time). But, when you have a talent like Dawson Knox - a man with so much obvious ability that when he declared for the NFL as a *junior* he went THIRD round, even though he'd never scored a TD in college - you find a way to USE HIM!!! Talk about a humiliating commentary on an offensive coordinator. His offense steadfastly FAILED against good competition, yet he never tried to adjust and make use of WORLD CLASS talent right under his nose. When every secondary in the country figured out the Ole Miss offense and keyed on the "NWOs," apparently Longo didn't try to integrate a massive talent like Knox.
And now, when the offense SO BADLY needs a selection of short and intermediate passing routes, the tight end position is yet again completely ignored. I do not presume to know more than a highly-paid offensive coordinator who has been doing his job for decades, but I sincerely believe these issues need addressing. If you won't throw to your TE...why the heck not??

We are now a running team. are we really under-utilizing the te position? Our te's have more receptions than either ugt they throw a lot more now.a or msu. not quite as much as lsu but they throw it a lot more now.

Under their previous coach, Arkansas was a "running" team and they ate us alive passing to their TE's.

you guys just repeat what commentators says
richie rod is actually smart. just not smart enough.
we don't run slat routes or anything up the middle because we are trying to SPREAD the defense. We are a running team and to spread the defense who stack the box is to obviously throw out and deep routes.
honestly our offense is just bama 2007-2017. only difference is bama has the best o-line and could rely on the run. sure, you might be down a score in the 1st quarter and think the games within reach, but the end of the whistle you'll lose by 30 points.
defenses are stacking the box and daring us to throw the ball. except johnny boy can not throw. aj mccarron wasn't good, but he had to complete a few easy throws every once in a while and he got that done. we can not do that. if johnny boy could throw half way okay to where defenses respect the pass game then we'd might have the best running game in the history
but as it stands, the running game is dying because defenses are stacking the box and daring us to throw. and johnny boy can't throw worth a damn so it doesn't work out.
richie rod needs to re-do the whole thing, this aint it cheif

Good lord man clean that shite up and I’ll try and read it again.

Man, PLEASE don't take offense...I do not mean any...but were you REALLY high when you typed out that nonsensical diatribe? Lord knows I've committed some garbage to the Eternal Google after a "few too many," so...
Did you not read my post stating the EXACT OPPOSITE of what you're saying? And my data didn't come from "commentators." It came from actual DATA...like numbers and stuff. "Stack the box" (your favorite phrase) all you want. The Rebels are TOP TWENTY running the ball. And your "johnny boy" references completely ignore the fact that the Rebs have TWO QBs...and one ain't named "Johnny."
My favorite line was "richie rod is actually smart. just not smart enough." Will you please clarify that?

The fact Matt Luke is our head coach, and the consistent lack of adequate game management (I mean... holy shite at some of his in-game decision-making) undercuts any argument anyone can make about the logistics of scheme, regardless of how impassioned or correct.
Luke is proof not all millionaires must be competent or particularly insightful. He’s a slightly chubbier Glenn Boyce.
