Why is Hilton Head so popular?

Been a couple of times and I just don't get the appeal. It's a bigger, more crowded version of St. Simons. Does everyone's northern grandparents retire there and make them like it by default? Am I missing something?
ETA: I'd lump Destin into the same category; why does everyone seem to go to one of these two beaches in particular?

Because there's a beach there.

I prefer Jekyll Island, but I'm a Georgia homer through and through

Outside of Golf, I'm not sure why people go

I would guess it first became popular with the upper middle class because of the golf courses, and then the masses decided that they could be cool if they went where the nouveau rich went, and it has becoming a ridiculous cesspool since then.
If I am going to the Atlantic I am going to one of: Isle of Palms/Folly Beach around Charleston; Tybee; Jekyll or Fernandina/Ameila Island.

I was talking to an older retired doctor who told me before the bridge was built he was invited to Hilton Head by developer, Charles Fraser
He said he and his wife took a ferry to the island and there was a large, circus type tent where they met. There were large displays showing the "vision" of how the island would evolve.
Fraser told the group they could buy ocean front lots for $5000.00 and he bought one. All the way back to Charleston he said his wife "blessed" him out for being so stupid.
Ten years later his wife blessed him out for only buying one lot.

It is the beach in SC that doesn't allow neon signs on the island. If you like neon, ohioians, Medevil Times, casino boats and buffett seafood, try Myrtle Beach.
If you want golf, no neon, biking, horseback riding, sport fishing and clean beaches go to Hilton Head.
If you want something off the beaten path go to Defuskie Island.

Destin has an appeal. Especially of you like the nice beaches and you have kids. You can cover both there. I have not been to Destin in 5 or 6 years but my kids love it there and the wife and I get to enjoy the clean beaches.

Not so fast my friend
Cumberland Island and Jupiter Island
Now you can end the story.

I was talking about the islands around Charleston.
I absolutely love Cumberland. St Simons is always at the top of my list, too, because we had a house there when I was growing up and would spend most of my summers on East Beach. Edisto is my favorite SC beach, and SC had a lot of good beaches. It's getting more and more crowded, but it isn't commercialized.

I'm stationed in Beaufort and work weekends in Hilton Head.
Here's why I hate Hilton Head:
The place is a tourist trap.
It seems like it is the only place in the US that retards from Ohio like to go for vacation.
Everything is expensive.
Every plantation charges money to get on. I shouldn't have to pay $10 to get on Sea Pines to see the fricking lighthouse.
Except for one or two bars, most bars are expensive and over rated. If you enjoy white trash, the Bermuda Triangle is the place to go on Saturday nights.
Traffic is a nightmare, most drivers are from out of state and don't understand how roundabouts work. It takes an average of two hours just to get on the island on Friday afternoon.
Hilton Head has lost it's appeal to me.

Halfway between Destin and PC is where you want to be. Seaside, Watercolor, etc.
