If you were wanting a top college prep from a high school in the south what would you choose?
Does said school have boarding option or just a day school?

The ones in metro ATL (Westminster, Pace, Greater Atlanta Christian, Woodward, Blessed Trinity, etc) are all day schools. Actually not sure of many college prep boarding options in GA

Tier 1: Woodberry Forest and Episcopal in Virginia
Tier 2: McCallie and Baylor in Chattanooga
Not a lot of boarding schools in the south relative to the Northeast

Is McGill-Toulin a boarding school?
I know St Stanislaus is the "mother" school for it.

St. Joes in Jackson is supposedly a highly thought of school. I had a couple cousins go there so I grew up hearing all about it as well. As far as where I'm from, Birmingam, I would say that either The Altamont School or JCIB. What's weird about JCIB is that it's public school that's part of Shades Valley High School but you have to test into it or something like that. I knew one kid that went there and was taking AP stats and chemistry as a sophomore in high school

Christ School just outside of Asheville, NC. Good school. I went there.
Just FYI- it's the same prep school that the Plumlees attended.

How common is it for a high school student to attend "boarding school?"
I've only known a few people. 2 were boys who were "sent" to "Military school."
A guy I worked with sent his daughters to Maine for HS.
A friend of my daughter goes to boarding school in Asheville, NC.
I never really thought about it or considered it as an option for my kids. Is this something I should have looked into?

Woodward is the best hands down in the South and it boards feeds and all that jazz. Some of the others mentioned are top notch.
They all will break the bank.

Depends on where they want to go to college. Some boarding schools are pipelines into the top academic schools as they are geared more towards college prep and less from general high school education.
My grandfather went to Mobile High because that is what they could afford but his younger brother (born a decade later) was able to go east for high school which got him into MIT for college. Big difference in the opportunities it opened up for him.

Where in Ashville?
When a kid tells you they want to go to Columbia or Stanford it may take a bit different tact than trying to get into a nearby state school. East coast has some damn good feeder prep schools but I would much rather find a school in the south to feed from.

JCIB was ranked the #1 high school in America a few years ago.
