1. I don't think Iceman was a minor character.
2. I don't know that he was a better pilot than Maverick. He just stayed out of trouble.

He wasn't the focus of the story to the point we know almost nothing about him
He was a higher rated pilot and consistantly out performs maverick in the moving while staying within the rules of engagement.

I would compare Maverick and Iceman to Brett Favre and Peyton Manning. In ideal circumstances with all the right pieces in place, I would take Iceman / Manning. If I had to overcome the odds against superior power, I would take Maverick / Favre.
