I'll RA to have this stickied; this is from local reporter Elizabeth White:
quote:
#UPDATE: 23 men, women and children confirmed dead in Beauregard tornado, the death toll is expected to rise.
The devastating damage focused in and around a mobile home community along Highway 51 south and Lee Road 38. The mobile homes decimated, debris scattered for several miles. The area has become ground zero of what’s shaping up to be the worst natural disaster in Lee County history.
Search, rescue and recovery crews worked all afternoon and into the night. They will resume operations first thing in the morning. A massive response is expected as daylight dawns on Beauregard.
Residents, please stay at home. Do not jam up the roadways and make it even more difficult for first responders to do their jobs. Keep in mind there are dozens of families who still have missing loved ones and the focus needs to be on them - and first responders safety.
This is a day Lee County will never forget as Mother Nature did her worst leaving devastation in this community.
#DONATIONS are being taken at Church of the Highlands - Dream Center located at 1103 North Donahue starting Monday morning 7:00 AM.
- Baby items
-Toiletries
-New socks, underwear, shoes
-Tarps
-work gloves

I feel for the families of every single victim but especially the 6 year old's family. That's absolutely gut wrenching and seriously breaks my heart.
I was wondering if you'd made it thru okay when I heard where it hit. Glad you're okay.

Update from Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones: fatality count remains at 23; 100+ workers performing search and rescue as the sun comes up. He expects the death count to rise today.
Worst tornado to hit Lee County in at least 50 years.

Prayers for all affected, especially those families that lost loved ones.
I survived a large EF3 that tore my house apart in Cleburne Tx 2013. The damage from even one that size was enough to have most houses in the neighborhood torn down and rebuilt and have my culdesac on the front page of most of the major news websites. The mental anguish of going through your broken heirlooms and ruined stuff is quickly washed away by knowing your family and friends were safe.

Here is some drone footage of the damage path in Beauregard in Lee County (Facebook link, only place they’ve posted it):
LINK
The National Weather Service in Birmingham gave it a preliminary rating of EF-3, but I suspect they will upgrade it to EF-4 once they do their surveys.

That's awful. I can't imagine being in a trailer with no place to go and a tornado bearing down on you. What a helpless feeling.

Amateur meteorologist here.
I've noticed that tornadoes generally take a southwest to northeast path. If you held a compass with the pointer due north, the probable path would be 45-60 degrees ENE.
With this in mind, if you see you are in a projected path and depending where you are in this projection...
Heading southeast, northwest or south is safer. I keep this in mind when the warnings start popping up.

It all depends on where you are.
Case in point: a friend of mine was driving his vehicle the day the devastating tornado hit Tuscaloosa in 2011.
He heard on the radio that the tornado was heading to downtown Tuscaloosa. He went south and east, only to run right into the tornado that was coming up from behind him.

Lee County EF-4 was down for at least 24 miles.. up to one mile wide - Chris Darden NWS Birmingham MIC
I did not expect yesterday's severe weather threat to produce a mile-wide EF-4.
