Pardon my ignorance but do they teach their own classes or do they just go from class to class to speak?

Not even close.
There are oodles of small private schools who take that prize.
In terms of public and/or state universities, you’d be hard-pressed to find a list without Texas A&M towards the top of it.

They teach their own classes; they’re hired by the department.
But often they don’t learn of their “need” until days before classes start.
In many ways, those positions are like long-term substitutes.
That’s not to say there aren’t great lecturers and adjuncts, but the permanency of their positions is all but non-existent.

At Universities with any Research mission, which would be all SEC Universities, Instructors and Lecturers are assigned their own classes. Most Instructor/Lecturers if they are full time teach a 4 class teaching load per semester, and have service requirements like advising undergraduates, maybe being faculty advisor for a student organization, etc.
So Lecturers they would have their own classes they are responsible to meet, instruct students, grade students and assign final grades, etc.
Now some Lecturers could be hired on a course basis to fill in for staff shortages. Those are within the Faculty/Instructor hierarchy, the lowest in rank.

My dad and 12 million other Americans like him fought in World XXX II to preserve freedom. Incidentally, they also freed bunch of people from concentration camps too. So Jesse, there are things worse than XXX. Allowing tyrants to persecute people and standing by idle is one of them. Thank God for those brave soldiers that understand that fundamental fact. They allow you to spew your ignorance in peace.
