If we passively detect a signal from an ETI, it could be troubling for religious people. Their worldview could be severely threatened, and there may be some significant upheaval in religious countries or even religious extremist violence. But it would die down, the thinking goes, and people would return to their daily lives. It would be revolutionary for scientists, but most people would move on with their lives. That's how the WT 2020 paper sums up the thinking. But how would nations and their political leaders react?

But whenever nations are vying with one another, there will be some measure of realpolitik. And when it comes to contact with an ETI, monopolizing that contact presents potential benefits for the nation that monopolizes it. "The history of international relations viewed through the lens of the realpolitik tradition of realist political thought suggests, however, that there is a measurable risk of conflict over the perceived benefit of monopoly access to ETI communication channels," the authors write in WT 2020. "This possibility needs to be considered when analyzing the potential risks and benefits of contact with ETI."

For Wisian and Traphagan, the danger lies in what we might do to ourselves.

Let it go to voice mail. The only point we should go looking for aliens is when we can travel to them.

Nope and if I don't recognize the number I ignore it. Pretty sure all aliens will have a number like this +1-821-JzQ-4009-?@4J-2

Wow, what a master class in bending the words to fit what you need them to fit.

The "authors" of the bible would be so proud. You know, the "authors" that ripped the stories of a god named Yah and one named Weh from prior ancient middle eastern religions?

No one knows what the phrase means so I could be right. If there are aliens God created them too.

Not sure what they are thinking if they are including Christians in this list. The bible talks about other beings coming down from the heavens and creating essentially superhumans by sleeping with women.

We should give them the internet, and watch them destroy themselves.

They definitely have one of the most unique and original premises I've read in sci-fi. But be prepared, they can be a tough read. Most of the books read like text books. Whether they be history books, science books explaining things in a very technical way, or psychology/ sociology books. It's interesting knowing it's translated from Chinese, and keeping in mind the difference in perspective from western authors.

As far as the actual story telling element of it, I wouldn't consider it great though. The character building is painful, especially when it comes to women. The men are essentially all incels, and the women are written like anime girls. No matter how educated, experienced, or successful a woman in this book is, the men only notice their looks and never take them seriously, and they're all incompetent, naive, and need men to shield them from how scary the world is bc women are just too pure to know there's truly evil in the world, middle aged female scientists still behave like school girls with crushes, that kind of shite. It's very "cringe", and I hate to use that word.

The attempts at psychology and sociology are painful too. Everything can be neatly packed into all these little "isms", people's entire world views change at the drop of the hat. It's like the author doesn't know how people actually think and work. Almost like he's been isolated his entire life, and only has an idea of how humans are "supposed" to act, and his views on women all come from 1950s television.

The religious aspects of the books are also not very believable to me. I have a hard time believing that people who know for a fact that they're talking to an alien civilization and are in direct contact with them would just immediately start calling them lord and praying to them, despite knowing there's nothing divine or supernatural about them at all, just a technologically advanced extraterrestrial society. Especially the academic elite, like in the book. Or start worshipping average humans as "Saviors" and comparing them to Jesus or the virgin Mary, just bc they have been given authority. That aspect of the book comes across as ridiculous to me

You ask how the world’s governments should respond. The answer is simple, unite for.

Unite to focus as many resources as possible on learning everything possible about the alien civilization. This will be the most profound discovery in the history of mankind.

How they actually respond is anyone’s guess. Humanity has evolved to be very unpredictable in groups. We can predict the individual because of his health, education, etc., but there is a dynamic within groups that keeps them from ever being reliably stable, a thirst for individual power.

This relic from our ancestors keeps us from uniting for something. We almost instinctively unite against something, however.

The best example of this in our everyday lives is politics. There are constant representative battles in which we invest our figurative personal power and actual wars that allow us to participate physically against something.

This is how I expect our governments, as representatives of our individual powers, to react to the detection of a bonafide alien civilization. Unite against.

Well I bet it will be an alien prince with all kinds of wealth if we just pony up the money so he can get what is rightfully his.
