Has anyone ever taken a one way video interview?

I just was called by a recruiter from a job and was expecting a short phone interview before the traditional in-person interview, but I was told my official "first interview" would be a one way video. Anyone have any tips or info?

Yes it was awkward and bizarre. Felt like I was being interviewed by skynet.

Two way? Yes. One way? No. That is very strange. Why would the person on the other end not show their video?

I would feel much better with a two way interview, this just feels like I'm posting a shitty bio to a sad dating website...

Creepy. And disrespectful. Kind of like being on the wrong side of a 2 way mirror.

I would like it as the interviewer. I get to see how you dress/act/etc plus I wouldn't have to be on video myself.

Why, as an employer, would you not want to be on video? If you dress and act differently than what a typical interviewee will then why do you care how that interviewee dresses and acts?

I would refuse the interview. Don't be surprised if that is exactly what they are looking for.

Well I did some research and I feel a little more confident about it. My assumption was that I was being recorded as I was reading and answering the questions in real time but apparently I can read the questions off camera and then answer them. Still a little strange

Refuse it? the thought has crossed my mind but I feel like I stand to gain more by at least doing it and hoping for the best rather than not doing it and for sure not getting a job that could make my life waaaay easier. Not that I'm rejecting your opinion, shite, I asked for it , but why do you think I should refuse it?

I don't know why, but I'd be a hell of a lot more comfortable with that then the five person panel interview I just went through.

Yeah I agree with that. During my last round of job interviews one of them had me come in and sit in the middle of this long board room table while 4 people seated opposite me asked me questions for like an hour. I'll say that was definitely worse.

Yeah. Did it.
Weird process.

Dress the same as for F2F obviously
Practice in front of a webcam to look as natural as possible. Take some time to center the picture, Etc.
You have only seconds to respond to the questions and no real time to stall or talk through an answer so make sure you have a good idea Of what questions you'll be asked.

Well I mean it depends entirely upon your individual situation. You asked and I answered given my situation

Take it and let us know how it goes. I've never heard from anyone who has done that style of an interview

I hate panel interviews. As for the one way video, I think it speaks volumes about who you are interviewing with. It is disrespectful.

Eh. Big companies are headed this way as a means of relying less on outside recruiting firms and more easily sorting through applicants. UnitedHealth is using these as SOP and I'm sure they're not alone.

Yes. Absolutely did not like it. Felt like I was a crazy person talking to myself.

That was the single most awkward 15 minutes of my professional life. I wouldn't wish that shitstorm of a process on anyone.
