I'll second Top O' the River. Food is fantastic, and portions are huge.
Noccullula Falls in North Gadsden.
Mentone is kinda like Gatlinburg without most of the touristy stuff. Fantastic hiking, rafting...other outdoor stuff...etc. it's about an hour north of there.
There is a downtown area that has been updated and is kind of neat.
Could also go fishing on the river.

Grew up there. My advice is to find another job.
As for Top of the River, that was my first job way back when. I washed dishes. My nickname was "Salt." I referred to everyone else as "Pepper."

It's a 6 week job, temporary. They're increasing my pay roughly 30%, paying for hotel and for mileage. My job in Montgomery is sending me there since they're short handed.

Coosa River bass fishing is awesome.
They usually have Riverfest every year too. Other than that.. I ain't got a clue. B'ham/Guntersville/Huntsville are all within an hour though.

Gadsden blows. Top of the River is good but don't expect there to be any bar scene with good looking women in that town.

HAHA i'm in Southside, About 5 miles from Gadsden. Gadsden sucks dick. While you are here be prepared to pay an occupational tax if you are working in the city limits.
If you like wings and beer, try the Gridiron on south 3rd st. They normally have live music on Friday and Saturday night. Also try LocalJoes, it is a BBQ joint with outside seating right on the river. Good food and beer plus live music Thursday - Saturday. LocalJoes is right off of hwy 77 under the bridge going into Southside.
If you can find the time to go fishing do it. The Coosa is slap full large mouth bass. If you like pulling in large catfish you can always go below the Dam in Ohatchee (20 mins south of Gadsden).

Oxford has a lot of stuff. And if you drive down to Oxford, can you go by satan's (otherwise known as my ex mother-in-law) house and take a shite on her front porch?

I spent my teenage summers visiting my grandparents who lived near Gadsden and recently spent several weeks in Gadsden for work.
As you know, I'm from Elmore county too and let me tell you that no, you just THINK you know redneck. You're about to see 'neck' in an entirely different light.
That part of Alabama is the southern end of Meth Mountain (that area always records more labs than any other part of the state) and now they've also got heroin. In 2014, Jefferson county had 124 heroin OD deaths out of a population of 650,000. Etowah county had 71 with a population of 100,000. Also, in 2015 Etowah county had 621 STD cases. For comparison Elmore (population 81,000) only had 374, so if you're going to sample the locals make sure you wrap it up.
As far as resturants go, when we were there we ate at several local places downtown (Broad Street) and all were good.
If you're into outdoor stuff, take a float trip with Big Wills Outfitters. There on a good sized creek just outside town. The float alone is relaxing, but if you fish all the better. That creek is loaded with Coosa Redeye bass.

I just moved to Hokes Bluff last year which is right outside of Gadsden. Rent a house there or in Southside if you want a quiet neighborhood. I have been told that Southside went from very redneck to very preppy recently because all the higher tax bracket earners have moved out of Gadsden. I've seen lists where the actual city of Gadsden is the worst city in the state when taking into account the crime levels and the unemployment rates.

Good info here. Gadsden is a shithole and its hard to understand why. Geographically, it has a lot going on for it: it's on the river, Nocolulu Falls is there, Metone is close, and Big Wills Creek is there. I tell my wife all the time, Gadsden should be exactly like Chattanooga. I hope they can turn it around, but the rednecks there are pretty stupid.
