You people are crazy. Top Of the River is awful. I don't much care for fried seafood though, so there's that. But they also don't serve beer, unless they've recently changed. All the fat people sitting in the lobby waiting for a table is a huge turnoff.

Gadsden is pretty bad. I'd probably spend all my free time in the Back 40 Taproom if I were stuck there for any extended time. I really haven't spent much time there though since dating a girl from there in college in the late 90's.

Oxford has a lot of stuff. And if you drive down to Oxford, can you go by satan's (otherwise known as my ex mother-in-law) house and take a shite on her front porch?

Give me her address, I work in Oxford everyday. And i feel a nice one coming on.

Good info here. Gadsden is a shithole and its hard to understand why. Geographically, it has a lot going on for it: it's on the river, Nocolulu Falls is there, Metone is close, and Big Wills Creek is there. I tell my wife all the time, Gadsden should be exactly like Chattanooga. I hope they can turn it around, but the rednecks there are pretty stupid.

Agree. They definitely do not take advantage of some things they could. I've never understood why it's the way it is. Being on the river like they are.. they could be so much more.

Most people in Alabama who don't live in either city tend to consider Anniston and Gadsden as the twin armpits of Alabama. Never lived there myself but always hated driving through either. I'm not sure either has a "trash-free" part of town.

On an unrelated note, nearby Jacksonville seems to be a small gem of a college town.

The area behind the Gadsden Country Club is pretty nice. Have a friend that lives back there. Gadsden has a pretty nice downtown area as well, and it seems they've worked to improve it in recent years with more restaurants and with Back 40 Brewing being there. The rest of the city is pretty forgettable, and like others have said, there's a special breed of redneck there. Not sure how to describe it, but someone mentioned earlier its proximity to Sand Mt(ie. Meth Mountain) and that probably has a lot to do with it.

It is surprisingly nice and alive for an otherwise decidedly blah place.

That was me. Unless you've been around them, you can't really understand just how different/odd people from up on the Mountain are when compared to pretty much anyone else. Funny thing is, it really isn't the dope. They were that way back in the 80s when the product of choice was Moonshine instead of Meth.

She lives out in Cider Ridge (nice golf course btw). Just drive until you smell sulfur.

Born and raised in Gadsden. There really isn't much to do honestly. Enjoy your stay and stay away from the east side.

Plenty of options already mentioned above. I work in Gadsden so here's a few things...

Top O' the River has been mentioned but I prefer The Fish Market, which is pretty much next door.

I highly recommend eating at Louie's in Rainbow City. It's a pretty new Italian-ish place with pizza, sandwiches, subs, and homemade pickles. Meatball parm is the shite.

If you want out of Gadsden and more outdoors stuff, head north to Cherokee County to visit Weiss Lake, Cherokee Rock Village, or Little River Canyon. A handful of kayak/canoe rental places nearby. Rednecks everywhere but it's a vastly underrated spot in the state as far as scenery goes.

I like the Fish Market because I can pull up in my boat and tie off at the dock and eat there.

I grew up fairly close, overall, I hate the place. If you like outdoors stuff, check out Noccalula Falls. Chestnut Station and is alright on the weekends, usually live music and a few good looking girls. Blackstone Pub & Eatery is a more laid back crowd though. Go check out Back Forty. Overall though, not shite to do and it really is a terrible place overall. A lot of trash.

They've been closed for years.

The city's in the process of demolishing some of the abandoned buildings.

I remember hitting those up back in the 80's.

As someone else mentioned.. Little River Canyon is vastly underrated and you can kayak as well. Beautiful place.
