If you want to be incredibly cut and in amazing athletic shape - Yes, do CrossFit. However, real results requires a lifestyle change that most people aren't willing to embrace.

If you want to be more than what you are now...you must do more than the what you're used to.

CrossFit is essentially a community of people who motivate and push each other to success. They're unfairly considered a cult by some, weirdos by others. In reality, CrossFit is just a community of motivated individuals who enjoy the results of pushing their bodies to the physical limit.

It's not for everyone. You must enjoy pain. There's no room for weakness.

Check out the Strong Lifts 5x5 program.

The program is built around the bench press, the squat, the dead lift, the overhead press, and the barbell row. The program has you alternate these exercises 3 days a week. The creator also offers a lot of good tips regarding proper technique and ways to correct poor technique.

All the women that are on ESPN and are "crossfit stars" are scary looking. These crossfit "athletes/stars" idea is a fricking joke. I equate crossfit games to the metrx strongman competition. Fun watching during the summer when nothing better is on

The girls that do crossfit at my gym are all in amazing shape and hot as hell. Granted, I go to a crossfit on a college campus so it just has a bunch of college age sorority girls trying to stay skinny.

If you ask any crossfit owner, only about 5-10% of a crossfit gym are "firebreathers" Those are the annoying fricks who post exclusively about crossfit on facebook and live and breath crossfit.

The 90% rest of the people are like me. I treat it in the same respect of a pickup game of basketball. Good excercise to stay ins hape and get some competitive athletic atmosphere. When I leave, I don't tell everyone about how my pickup basketball games went because nobody gives a shite. You are someone working out, not an "athlete" Because that annoying 10% won't shut the frick up about it, that is all everyone pieces together about crossfit not realizing that isn't reflective of most people who do crossfit.

It is expensive as frick though. I hate seeing 120$/month leave my bank account. Spending that much keeps me going because I want to get my money's worth and I enjoy the competition/drive of having other people there. Not to mention my knowledge of kinesiology is not good enough to program my own workouts. I also enjoy olympic lifting and crossfit one of the only type of gyms that have bumper/oly lifting plates. I get yelled at everytime I go to Mountainside Fitness and miss a snatch or clean.

Parkjas are you still in school? I forget

If you are in Auburn, you can go to Tiger Iron for 20$/month and there is a trainer that does crossfit and is experienced enough to teach you all the lifts (olympic lifting is very technical). Once you know the lifts and are safe (huge point is safety, never would recommend crossfit to someone with no instruction or going to a crossfit gym with shitty coaches)

You can just go to crossfit's website or a number of other crossfit websites that post their workouts online for free. You can just do them at Tiger Iron by yourself

Also, there are a number of places that offer cheaper crossfit but there is occasionally the tradeoff in instruction/coaching, facilities and other aspects. I have a friend back home whose neighbor was a former D1 athlete who has a garage gym and he pays him 35$/month for access and cost of equipment. A group of about 4 of them that all workout together

If you go 3-4x a week you will see results. It is expensive ($150/mo here). If you do decide to do it just keep it to yourself and don't talk a/b your workouts like it's interesting to anyone other than you.

Most people view their membership as paying for perosnal training as a group

Think about it this way, my class size is typically about 10-15 people. Our "coach"/trainer is a current PhD candidate in kinesiology or something to that nature at Auburn who is an assistant strength and condition coach for olympic sports at Auburn. He walks around and monitors everyone, checks on technique, encourages and provides insight on general health.

Same thing a personal trainer does except instead of paying 50-100$ per one hour, you pay 120-175$/month (depending on location). If you go 4 weeks a month 4-5x per week, you are going 16-20 times a month.

Roughly about 8$/ workout at that rate. More you go, less expensive it becomes per workout.

Again, they have specialty weights and equipment you won't see at more general fitness centers.

Most places have free intro classes and such, stop by a few different places. The key is finding a place that suits you as well as a staff that is qualified and top notch. Otherwise you are wasting money. Huge difference between the quality of crossfit gyms

Typically if a person has made it recently to "regionals" or if they have advanced certifications in olympic lifting or such, they are at least decent and know what they are talking about. Just need to stay away from the "I started crossfit half a year ago and thought it would be so awesome to open a gym and coach."

I used to do it for offseason wrestling workouts in high school to compliment my lifting. I would mainly do the ones geared toward cardio with some push-ups or light lifting.

I enjoy circuit training in general. Get in. Get your workout in. Get out.

I used to go to the martial arts room at the Bama rec and do circuit training. Much better than a crowded weight room.

Anything that gets you motivated to work out and stay healthy isn't a bad thing IMO. Just don't be "that" Crossfit guy who takes up half the fricking gym and acts like a holier than thou douche over it.*

*This does not apply to all Crossfit folks, but there's certainly their fair share of these guys.

Some really horrible and inaccurate descriptions in here, and some really good ones.

Done it for 3 years now, it's not overkill.. some workuots take 20 minutes (plus some warmup), some take a full hour, none take longer.

My advice, without a doubt give it a try. My opinion is it's the best workout anybody can do. From average people to real athletes.. it creates an athletic-well balanced and proportionally built body, plus it will undoubtably build some character and strength that isn't in the form of muscle.

I'd advise trying to get as much as you can and do it from home, the crossfit gyms seem to be kinda cultish... but I'm not a big gym guy to begin with...

I'd also say that I do cheat from time to time, I cut the runs down some, maybe drop a round or two, but usually decide before I start the workout how much I'm going to cut out.

Website I use for my workouts.

eta: double up on what bell said... do crossfit, but don't be a douche.

Kinda like listen to good music that isn't on the radio, but don't be a hipster.

And be prepared for a learning curve on stuff like snatches and cleans if you're not doing those right now.. lots of that stuff.

'Crossfit?? I play real sports' thing is really a dumb thing to say that has caught on with ppl that have never done it.

Remember reading a story about a guy that went undrafted, took a couple years off, got into crossfit and then made the Steelers roster. I can't tell you how much better I am at my sport now that I do crossfit... it helps athletes, but yes doing stuff like crossfit games is pretty dumb.

I did some crossfit workouts (disclaimer: I am in pretty bad shape) it is extremely hard on your joints. But a 30 min workout and you will be good for the day.

Some of the exercises are good exercises when done correctly, but any time you try and do as many reps as you can in a certain amount of time you are asking to get hurt. I know it isn't true with some crossfit gyms, but the majority of those places don't teach proper form. I know a couple of people just in the last month that have hurt themselves doing crossfit (herniated disc in back in one, torn labrum in the other).

Also since its a crossfit thread:

You can tell who in this thread has never done crossfit, tried it once and probably sucked, and/or never work out at all.

On a routine basis I do a HIIT/Crossfit mix (little heavy on weights, though)I am about to start doing crossfit more, though. I just went to a friends grand opening of their studio in Austin and I did their full class on Saturday. My upper body is still sore, and I was NOT expecting that b/c I train fairly hard.

Couple of things. Diet is very important with ANY training. Not just crossfit. At some point you have to decide what's more important to you. It's just a fact you will face. The more serious you are with working out though, your body will dictate to you what you need and how often due to your metabolism changing. I eat a pretty structured diet, but I do cheat sometime son the weekends with a meal. I'm not sure I'm THAT dedicated, but I'm trying to b/c I have very specific goals. Anyway, Diet is always #1. You won't be successful at any routine if you don't fuel your body proper.

Crossfit is hard. It's supposed to be hard. Just like any training.

Obsessed? Sure. I have been told that many times, but I would rather be obsessed with fitness than being a lazy arse.

If you want any tips, ideas, or have questions about diet or training in general feel free to ask me on here or you can hit me up on twitter. @hoginthesw.

We have a fitness thread on the Arkansas board with a lot of information you might benefit from. You'll just have to sift through it.

oh, and for those of you who think that women look gross and too defined...I'm not in the least bit. I am fit and tone. Now, I want more... but, it's VERY hard for women to get that "manly" look. Most of us just look fit and defined.
