My darling daughter (no pics) is applying to colleges, and I thought what better place than the SEC OT to discuss the process. She has already been accepted into Arkansas' Honors Program, she's awaiting a "decision" from the University of Alabama and Florida State, and she applied Early Decision 1 to Vanderbilt.

She has a 29 on her ACT, a 4.167 GPA, and is ranked 22 of 571 in her class. If it were your daughter - where else would you tell her is the best education for the $.

She's smarter than me, so I am of no help to you.

Me too, oh, me too.

I’ve run the Net Price Calculator more times than I could honestly count.

Well don't know how that's achieved but props. I not that smart. Could apply to UF I suppose. Don't know how many freshman they accept though vs transfers

UF is pretty expensive, and she probably should have applied early.

Vandy if you have the cash. Bama will be free for all 4 years if she can bump the ACT up a bit. Thats the best value. Or Arky if she qualifies for a free ride.

Don't send her to FSU. Your little girl is better than that.

I have my Arkansas bias, but Alabama sure does show love through merit aid. That darn ACT!!!

EDIT: Vanderbilt is actually very affordable. The hard part is getting in! These guys are actually pretty damn bright.

Yeah, she made her first and only “B” in AP Chemistry. Because of her ACT test scores, she’s having a difficult time with scholarships and merit aid.

I’m more baffled how a GPA over 4.0 is only 22nd in her class.

Seems like something is wrong with the scale

you go wherever gives you a free ride, especially if she has grad-school aspirations.

Purdue. Dunno about comparative financial aid, but list price starts out about half Vandy, and if she ever has a life outside the deep south, the degree is respected at least as much.

She honestly has never thought of Purdue. I’ll have her take a look - thanks for the tip

Also, for better or worse, the current President of Purdue is obsessed with not raising tuition. I'm not certain that applies to out-of-state, but there hasn't been an in-state (at least) increase for the past 5 or 6 years.

I'm also not certain how long that freeze can go on, but so far it's continuing to work out okay.

Very mediocre football team though, although the fans are pretty accepting.

First, I would narrow a field of study then work from there.

PU is good for tech
VU is good for teachers

Well if you are going to look at Purdue may as well look at Georgia Tech, probably on the same page of the grand catalog of higher education.

I think after 20+ years of working on it I-22 between Memphis and Birmingham is finally done, a plus.

Depends on what she wants to study. If STEM, then have her apply to Georgia Tech. For business, it's the best bang for the buck at UA(rk). If any other program, it doesn't matter.

Pick Vandy if she’s doing business , it’s a top 30 school and has a great name for itself on Wall Street
